On October 4, the Plainview Fire Department, under the direction of Chief James Mertz, kicked off it’s annual Fire Prevention week at Plainview Fire Department headquarters on Old Country Road.
Families from the community came out and were informed about fire safety, fire prevention and what to do in case of an emergency. There were also four live demonstrations. One was a mock auto accident where fire fighters used the Hurst Tool (Jaws of Life), hydraulic cutters and a sawz-all to remove the doors and roof of the auto in record time.
Another was a simulated dryer fire that could happen when the lint is not removed on a regular basis from the lint tray, it was quickly extinguished with the proper fire extinguisher.
A car was set on fire to show how fast the fire spreads inside the car and the last demonstration was a room with all the furnishings that would be in a basic room in any home and how a small fire quickly spreads and engulfs the room within minutes and why a smoke detector should be in every room.
Plainview fire fighters will also be going to all the schools in the fire district this week explaining fire safety and fire prevention to the children.
