Admissions Open House/International Pot Luck Feast

Westbury Friends School invites parents of school-age children to an Admissions Open House and International Pot Luck Feast. Join the school community to eat a delicious international meal, mingle with the school’s wonderful families and learn about and tour the school. Reunion in Bartersville

The Nassau Community College Theatre and Dance Department, in conjunction with the Africana Studies Department, presents the comedy Reunion in Bartersville, which will be performed through Jan. 31 and Feb. 3 through Feb. 7 at the Little Theatre. The 1933 class of Bartersville High is having its 50th reunion at Janie Mae’s house. All of the guests have arrived, ready for an evening of gaiety. They’re in for a heart-stopping surprise, however, when an unexpected guest arrives and turns their party into an evening of hilarious suspense. Written by Celeste Bedford. Performances will be at 8 p.m. each day except Sundays at 3 p.m. Tickets are $9; discounted to $7 for seniors aged 55 and over and children under 18. Author Visit

Adelphi University welcomes Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, best-selling authors of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, a thought-provoking and profoundly inspiring book that revealed the cruel reality faced by women who experience violence and oppression from around the world, such as sex trafficking and mass rape. The lecture will take place 7 p.m. in the Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom of the Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Ave. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the William E. Simon Lecture in American Civilization and Values Endowment. Husband-and-wife team Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn call women’s rights the moral issue of the 21st century. Community Emergency Response Team Program

The CERT Program educates people about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response and recovery skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. The training will give you some peace of mind, help you, your family and your community. Everyone can help and anyone can be a valuable team member. Becoming a CERT member is interesting, fun and free. Start with basic training and build your knowledge through ongoing training classes and hands-on exercises. Fundraising Event

 

The Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Garden City has found the perfect recipe for a successful fundraising event: excitement, elegance, and a worthy cause. The church hosts a live Auction of Fine Art and Memorabilia from the sports, music, and entertainment world, conducted by the professionals at AJ Ross Auctions. Participants will enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres during the preview at 7 p.m. and dessert after the auction event, which begins at 8 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will go to further the ministries and community services at THE LIFE, the new sister campus located in Westbury. Proceeds are also dedicated toward the medical expenses of 21-year-old Jessica Stevens, a church member who is battling severe complications from Lyme Disease. The painful process of looking for work is eased by joining the Spirited Group of the Long Island Breakfast Club. They Meet They Eat and They Seek. Harlem Wizards to Perform

The Garden City Student Aid and Scholarship Fund is bringing the Harlem Wizards to the high school gymnasium at 1 p.m. The event will be a rematch against a select team of Garden City teachers. The Wizards will perform their renowned program of Trick Hoopz and Alley Oops. There will be a half time show with audience participation. Refreshments, souvenirs and a 50/50 raffle will also be featured. Tickets are $10 in advance; $15 at the door. Flyers with order forms will be distributed through the schools.

Concert

Mark Rizzo, guitarist for Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy, will be performing at the Vibe Lounge in Rockville Centre. Doors open at 7 p.m. for guests 21 and older. Tickets are $10 to $15.

Seashore Safari

The Ethical Humanist Society of LI, 38 Old Country Rd., celebrates science from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in honor of Charles Darwin’s birthday. Tracy Marcus from Cornell Cooperative Extension presents a hands-on introduction to local marine life – sea stars, shellfish, hermit crabs, snails and…the infamous horseshoe crab. Children will create science projects reflecting the environmental impact of pollution. Arts and crafts will be available all day, including a graffiti wall. Other children’s activities will include a “survival of the fittest” game and dissecting owl pellets. Lunch will be sold. There is no fee; donations will be accepted. All are invited to attend. The NCC Black History Month Committee presents a month of programs and events in tribute to African-American achievements in America. All programs will take place in the College Center Building and are free, open to the public and accessible to the disabled. Call Charmian Smith 572-7376:

• Jan. 31: Classics for Kids. Cuentos Del Arbos (Tree Tales). Four charming Latino stories provide a splendid fiesta of musical theater just right for Spanish, English or bi-lingual audiences of all ages. The Pushcart Players perform the Spanish folk tales The Garden of Golden Oranges and Brothers Who Were Both Wise and Foolish; Juan Bobo or Silly John from Puerto Rico; and Caperucita Roja or Red Riding Hood told with a Latin rhythm. A spirited finale will send you home with dancing feet, clapping hands and a happy heart. 1 and 3:30 p.m.

• Feb. 2: Black to the Roots: Reggae’s Rise, Downpression and Reascension by Dr. Ptahsen-Shabazz. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. 21st Annual African American Read-In 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

•Zonta Club of LI, member of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization with a local club. Members help advance the status of women and are involved in many community service activities. The name Zonta is word taken from the Sioux and stands for honesty, trust, inspiration and the ability to work together for service and understanding.
