With the observation of February as National Spay/Neuter Month, Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the North Hempstead Town Board took the opportunity to announce a two-day low-cost spay and neuter clinic at the town’s animal shelter Feb. 27-28. Helping Promote Animal Welfare Inc., (PAW) a not-for profit animal welfare organization dedicated to ending animal overpopulation, will perform the spay/neuter procedures.
“Millions in taxpayer dollars are spent each year to deal with abandoned and unwanted pets,” Kaiman said. “Only when everyone does their part and take responsibility for spaying or neutering their pet will we begin to see a drop in the pet overpopulation problem plaguing communities all across the country.”
In the spirit of National Spay/Neuter Month, North Hempstead is hosting the location of the Helping PAWs mobile spay/neuter trailer at the Animal Shelter located at the end of Marino Avenue, Port Washington.
The Shelter Connection, a volunteer nonprofit located at the North Hempstead Animal Shelter, has generously agreed to subsidize $25 toward the spay/neuter procedure for the first 40 animals registered.
According to the Humane Society of the United States, a single unspayed female cat, her mate, and their offspring are capable of producing a total of 420,000 kittens in just seven years. And in six years, one unspayed female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies. This results in the euthanasia of millions of homeless pets, a further drain on taxpayer dollars.
