Plainview’s Cultural Arts Playhouse Center, Inc. was founded in 1995 by Bruce Grossman. Named by Long Island Press as Long Island’s 2007 Best Live Theaters, the Cultural Arts Playhouse is a year-round regional, off-off Broadway theatre that has produced over 500 productions including educational and touring shows.
The theatre serves more than 20,000 people each year with its professional adult productions, children’s theatre performances, and theatre education classes for ages 7-18.
The playhouse recently announced that they are presenting the Long Island Premiere of the Broadway smash hit musical 13. The show opened on Broadway on October 5, 2008, starring CAP alumni and Long Island native Al Calderon. The director is Bruce Grossman and the music and lyrics are by Jason Robert Brown and the book by Dan Elish and Robert Horn.
The cast includes Jesse Pimpinella, Michael Marmann, Jacob Levy, Taylor Brahms, Emily Tenenbaum, Allen Saltzman, Dylan Perlman, Kathleen McDonough, Danielle Jenkin, Dalon Bradley, Brianna Robinson, Brooke Grossman, Arianna Paz, Michael Kinzelberg and Christian Pappas.
In 13, Evan Goldman has it all – he’s popular, has the ‘perfect’ family and lives in the greatest city in the world – New York. That is until his parents get divorced and he’s forced to move to a small town in Indiana. Uprooted from his old life, Evan has to make new friends and somehow maneuver the battle field of high school to become part of the ‘in-crowd’. With wit and honesty, 13 is a hilarious, high-energy musical for all ages. It’s about the lessons one learns throughout life and the discovery that the journey to who you want to be starts with discovering who you are. Featuring an explosive rock score by celebrated composer Jason Robert Brown (Parade, The Last Five Years, Songs for a New World), 13 is a grown-up story about growing up.
Along with its Musical Theatre and Acting Academy and Young People’s Theatre, more than 2,000 students have had the opportunity to learn from the finest instructors in the New York area. With the over 150 years of combined experience of its staff, many of CAP’s students and performers have been able to use their CAP experiences and use the talents they have learned to do professional theatre, recordings, television and film. Jamie-Lynn Sigler, co-star of HBO’s The Sopranos and Brian Daddario and Marissa McGowan, costars of this year’s Broadway revival of Les Miserables are CAP Center and CAP MTAA alumni.
