American Heart Association Luncheon

Dr. Duffy Spencer will be a featured keynote speaker for the American Heart Association’s 9th Annual “Go Red for Women” luncheon which has been rescheduled (from Feb.10 due to the blizzard) at the Crest Hollow Country Club. The luncheon runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is a fee for this event. Admission fee includes attendance to one of the heart healthy workshops. Any questions, call AHA at 450-9123.

Our Changing World: Bullying, Cyberbullying, Youth Depression

A presentation for adults by John Halligan at 7 p.m. at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School. John Halligan’s son, Ryan, died by suicide on Oct. 7, 2003 after being bullied by classmates at school and online. He was 13 years old. Halligan’s presentation will cover the lessons learned too late for his family regarding how to deal with bullying, cyberbullying and teen depression. This is a don’t miss presentation for all parents in grades K to 12. Parents will be empowered with strategies to take preventive actions with their own children. Sponsored by POB and H.B. Mattlin Middle Schools.

Pet Peeves’ Fundraising/Networking Gala

Pet Peeves, the “voice of LI pets” invites you to attend “Unleashed,” the animal-lovers event of the year – a cool, lounge-inspired evening of funky décor, great food, dance music and spectacular raffle prizes. Enjoy a variety of delicious tapas, exotic martinis and mouthwatering desserts knowing that you’re helping to save the lives of abused, neglected, abandoned and potentially homeless animals on LI. If you’re fortunate enough to have the means to keep your pet happy and healthy, please help Pet Peeves provide the critical funding necessary to support safe haven types of programs that temporarily feed and care for the pets of people who have lost their jobs or homes. 6 to 10 p.m. at the Crest Hollow Country Club, 8325 Jericho Tpke., Woodbury. Driver Improvement Course

Conducted by the AAA of NY at Four Points Sheraton Hotel, 333 S. Service Rd. The six-hour course allows participants to get the latest driving information from AAA-certified instructors, a 10 percent discount on collision and liability insurance and a reduction of up to four points from NYS driver’s license. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; includes one hour lunch break. Family Concert of Spectacular Sounds

The North Shore Symphony Orchestra’s Family Concert entitled “Spectacular Sounds!” will feature NSSO’s principal cellist Jeong-Yoon Park as soloist in the final movement of Elgar’s Cello Concerto and also feature award-winning music students from Plainview Old-Bethpage JFK High School. Selected woodwind and brass students from POB JFK will perform with NSSO and be featured in interactive music with the audience. NSSO will also perform Dvorak Carnival Overture, Chabrier’s Espana, excerpts from Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals and Jupiter from Holst’s Planets. Conducted by NSSO’s Music Director and Conductor Susan Deaver, the concert will be held at 3 p.m. at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. •Family Support Group, an ongoing support group for those who have family members or other loved ones with mental illness.
