The Levittown Historical Society is celebrating its 22nd anniversary and the Levittown Historical Museum’s 13th anniversary this month. The historical society continues to give the Levittown schools’ second-graders museum tours, showing them what life was like in early Levittown.
The society has been very active in the community and continues to make themselves part of Levittown. In mid-February they had display tables at the annual WinterFest sponsored by the Levittown Community Council. Featuring “Guess the Candies” at their table, the historical society announced later in the month the winner who had guessed closest to the number of candies in the vase.
On March 21, the Levittown schools sponsored the LEADD day with a walk and fair afterwards and the historical society had an informational table there.
Soon after was the Community Recognition Night that was also sponsored by the Levittown School District. The historical society’s valued honoree this year was long-time society board member Cathy Manton, who has been treasurer, assistant curator and an active fundraiser.
The society’s student volunteer, Dominick Cox, was in the March regional technical school job skills competition and won. He will now go to Syracuse and compete against other states. The historical society is so proud of him.
The historical society operates the Levittown Museum, which is located in the Levittown Memorial Education Center on 150 Abbey Lane. The museum is open on Wednesdays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and Fridays 7 to 9 p.m. Tours are by appointment.
The society also has seven general meetings during the year. The March meeting was “Snap, Crackle and Pop Culture” and Bob Koenig spoke on the changes of popular breakfast cereals.
The April 19 meeting will feature a speaker from the Steuben Society who will examine the German-American legacy on Long Island. The meeting is held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and will be in the community room of the Levittown Public Library.
Levittown is featured in the “Then and Now” issue of Life magazine as the town continues to be famous nationwide. Many high school students outside of Levittown are using Levittown as their National History Day entry and have contacted the society for assistance in learning about Levittown.
The society welcomes longtime Levittown residents Don and Jo-Ann Fink as museum docents.
