Rabbits Compete for Best in Show

Old Bethpage Village Restoration opens its 2010 season by hosting 1,500 rabbits in the annual LI Rabbit Breeders Association show on April 10. The family-friendly show showcases a variety of breeds and classes, including Belgian Hares, English Angoras, Holland Lops and New Zealands, among others. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Exhibition Hall. Call 572-8400.

Independent Art Society

Yom Hashoah Program 2010

This year Plainview Jewish Center, 95 Floral Dr., will have as its keynote speaker for the annual Yom Hashoah commemoration, Sharon Rennert, the granddaughter of Tuvia Bielski, the leader of the Bielski Partisans depicted in the recent film Defiance. She is an award-winning independent filmmaker and television editor. Sharon Rennert will provide a unique and personal glimpse into the real characters behind Defiance. Her presentation will include exclusive Bielski family movies, photos, oral histories and excerpts from her documentary, In Our Hands: A Personal Story of the Bielski Partisans. The program will include lighting of memorial candles by honored Survivors of the Shoah, selected readings by Hebrew School Students, the moving reading of the names of those martyrs lost in the Shoah from the PJC Book of Remembrance and memorial prayers. Appreciation Concert

Atria Plainview, 12 Washington Ave., will host an appreciation concert featuring the resident chorus, in honor of the Mattlin Middle School Grandpals. The local senior living community will welcome the Grandpals to a concert performed by the residents of Atria Plainview, called “The Shower Singers.” Grandpals is a monthly intergenerational program that students collaborate with the seniors once a month on a project. 7:30 p.m. For more information, call 933-0002.

LI Reads Celebration

Nassau and Suffolk libraries are gearing up for LI Reads, One Island – One Book, a month-long initiative to promote reading during the month of April (April 11-17). Long Islanders are invited to participate. This year’s selection is The River of Doubt, Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journey by historian and former National Geographic editor and contributor Candice Millard. Millard will speak and sign her book at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library, 999 Old Country Rd., Plainview, at 10 a.m. Call 938-0077. Admission is free by ticket only. High Tea

The 7th Annual High Tea will be held at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 1000 Washington Ave., at 3 p.m. Gather friends together, come and enjoy delicious scones, tiny tea sandwiches and sweet treats. You can also enjoy shopping for unique handcrafted jewelry in between sipping your tea. Tickets are $18 each; advance purchase only. No tickets will be sold at the door. Long Island Roller Rebels

Long Island’s only flat-track Roller Derby league, the Long Island Roller Rebels, will host an action-packed doubleheader with the Pioneer Valley Roller Derby Teams from Northampton, MA, at Skate Safe America, 182 Bethpage Sweet Hollow Rod., Old Bethpage (249-1717). Stand-up for Little Shelter 2

A fundraiser for the Little Shelter of Huntington, one of Long Island’s oldest “no-kill” shelters. Guests appearing will include some of long islands favorite comics, and star the incomparable Johnny Rizzo. Owned by Harris Media Group, Jokerz Wild Comedy Club will aim to provide Long Island comedy fans with a fun and affordable night of stand up comedy.
