Robyn Hale Knows Oyster Bay
Robyn Hale called to identify the April 11 mystery picture in the Enterprise Pilot as the “Oyster Bay Water District facility on Shutter Lane in Oyster Bay Cove.”
Caroline DuBois said, “I absolutely know where it is. It’s the Oyster Bay Water District pumping station on Cove Road at Shutter Lane.” She explained, “They knew they had to build a new filtration plant because of the toxic chemicals in the groundwater. They have been seeping downhill from Syosset, 300 feet underground, for the past 50 years and have finally reached our drinking water well. There are carbon filters in the new system.”
Billy Minicozzi guessed where it was located. On a sports note, he had wished Tiger Woods good luck toward winning his sixth green jacket at the Augusta Masters 2010, but it seems that the golf pro lost his edge due to not playing for about five months, according to most reports. The winner was Phil Mickleson for his third time, and against odds since his family was faced with health problems, but were at his side, which was not the case for Tiger.
Vincent Pellegrino and his girlfriend Linda also knew that the picture is the water district facility on Cove Road and Shutter Lane.
We are welcoming back Mystery Picture expert John DeJesu who is now back in town and living with his two daughters on a two-week basis per visit. “I am here for good. I passed the mystery picture, it is off Cove Road. It is a new construction on Shutter Lane in Oyster Bay Cove,” he said.
Bob McEvoy, Senior, said, “The picture is of Oyster Bay Cove’s Shutter Lane pumping station. To the right is the barn that has the pumping station inside. The building on the left is the water treatment building.
“I was looking at the mystery picture last night and said, “I think I know that is where it is…”
As far as something new, he said, “They want to put up a cell phone installation on the old Grant’s building. That is what they called 127 South Street when I was a kid. It doesn’t bother me, I’m half a mile from there. They are all over the place so you have to live with it.
“And things are greening up,” he said.
We said, “On Easter morning, at about 7:30 a.m., I was making coffee and looking out at the back yard that was all green. When I went to clean the cup, the back yard was a riot of yellow. The old-fashioned groundcover flowers had all opened up. When I went to work on Monday, the cherry trees in front of my house were all pink with blooms. Suddenly there were yellow forsythia hedges everywhere. It happened overnight.”
Mr. McEvoy said he, too, had the yellow flowered groundcover. “I think of them as weeds. One good thing is you don’t have to water them.”
Mystery Mystery Picture!
Happily, Colleen Bagan called to fully identify the April 1 mystery picture. She said, “The flagpole is in front of the new boathouse of the Atlantic Steamer Fire Company and the little girl in the picture is Emily Moore! She’s my niece.” Mrs. Bagan is the wife of Atlantic Steamer Fire Company Chief Robert Bagan.
We were truly happy to have the complete identification of the flagpole. It is a great reminder of the day the boathouse was dedicated. The flagpole is unique in that it was donated by Ray Hornaski, longtime member of the department.
Chris Vaccaro of Oyster Bay also identified the photo. He said, “I believe it is the flagpole in front of the Atlantic Steamer Water Rescue facility located in Roosevelt Park.” He put that perfectly. Calling it a boathouse is not fully explaining the relevance of the building. Many thanks to all the callers.
