On a very chilly, blustery day, all 680 members of the New Hyde Park Little League, along with their coaches and supporters marched through the streets of New Hyde Park to officially kick-off the little league baseball and softball season in New Hyde Park.
When all the teams arrived at the field New Hyde Park Little League President Tom Pellegrino welcomed the many, many folks in attendance and then proceeded to congratulate the fall teams that were part of the championship teams including:
Boys 11U – 2009 NJBL Fall Champs
Girls Juniors – 2009 Kathy Pistillo Champs
Big League Boys Nassau County Champions
Senior Girls Section 5 Champions
Girls Minors District 29 Champions
Girls Majors District 29 Champions
Girls Majors District 29 Champions
Further, the following NHPLL girls who were honored by Nassau County for the standout seasons they had for the NHP Memorial Varsity Softball Team:
Katie Morales – All County Selection
Sam Flaum – All Conference Selection
Amanda Biz – All Conference Selection
Rosa Russi – All League Selection
Christina Burkey – All League Selection
Two young lady players then came to the mike and recited the following Little League Pledge: “I trust in God, I love my country and will respect its laws. I will play fair and strive to win. But win or lose I will always do my best.”
Pellegrino then inducted into the New Hyde Park Little League “Hall of Fame” the members of the 8631 G.E. Linder VFW, who are always supportive of the league and who always supply the color guard for many of our many events.” He then presented them with a plaque.
President Pellegrino then called up to the microphone the various public officials and each said a few words including: New Hyde Park Village trustee Richard Coppola who has always been very instrumental in making sure the little league was running smoothly, Nassau County Legislator Richard Nicolello, North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman, New York Assemblyman Thomas McKevitt, New Hyde Park Mayor Daniel Petruccio, Deputy Mayor Robert Lofaro and trustee Donald Barbieri, New Hyde Park Clerk/Treasurer, who is also a coach for his son’s team, Patrick Farrell and they ended with New York State Senator Craig Johnson, who simply said, “Play ball!”
Pellegrino added, “Please remember to patronize our sponsors who continue to support our league even during these difficult economic times. The New Hyde Park Little League provides the youth of our community the opportunity to learn important values such as teamwork and sportsmanship through America’s Pastime. The continued generosity of our sponsors enables our children to enjoy perhaps one of the greatest treasures of childhood – playing in Little League. As you come across these people within our community, please remember to thank them.”
It was then time to throw out the first ball and New Hyde Park Mayor Donald Petruccio did the honors with Chrissy Olive throwing out the first ball for the girls.
