The Hebrew Academy of Nassau County (HANC-Plainview) sponsored a hair drive to benefit the Israeli charity “Zichron Menachem” (www.zichron.org). What started as one girl growing her hair for the project quickly caught on; twelve braided ponytails were donated this week to help make wigs for children undergoing chemotherapy as part of their treatment for cancer. For several students, this was their second time donating.
Over 18 HANC girls have already participated in the project, and in this round of haircuts, several parents and teachers also participated. Stylists from ID Salon (www.idsalon.net) in Syosset volunteered their time to make sure each girl got a beautiful hairstyle. One sixth grade student decided to participate in the project for the second time because “I love my hair. But it will grow back. Someone else deserves to share my hair also.”
HANC is a private Jewish elementary school serving students from around the mid-Island area, including Plainview, Roslyn, Great Neck, Dix Hills, Merrick, Commack, Hicksville, Syosset and others.
This HANC project is one in a series of community outreach efforts designed to help those in need. For more information, please contact The Hebrew Academy of Nassau County at lisa@hanc.org or 681-5922.
