Inaugural Girl Scouts Walkathon, a Success

Despite the rain, more than 300 participants rallied together in support of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Healthy Living initiative at the Inaugural “Girls Go the Distance” Walkathon on April 25 at Jones Beach.

“We commend our walk participants for braving the elements and coming out to walk with us!” said Donna Ceravolo, executive director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “We cannot thank our sponsors, volunteers, board members, walk attendees and local community enough for their support of our organization and our Healthy Living initiative. Hopefully next year we’ll have less rain and more sunshine!”

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Healthy Living Initiative brings a unique perspective to keeping girls healthy, as girls define health in their own terms, placing as much emphasis on emotional and social well-being as physical health, nutrition and physical fitness. In addition to healthy eating and physical fitness, the Healthy Living Initiative also focuses on increasing girls’ self-esteem, media image awareness and how to develop healthy relationships.

Attendees participated in fun activities that helped them learn about healthy choices, while Girl Scout Alumnae and corporate teams met today’s Girl Scouts, networked with peers and became real-life role models for girls throughout Nassau County.

Corporate Sponsors for the event included: Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Farrell Fritz PC, Hofstra University, Lackmann Culinary Services, Leslie Cuneo of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, Leslie Segrete, Long Island Radio Group, New York Community Bank Foundation and Winthrop University Hospital.

Community Sponsors included: Adelphi University, Applebee’s, Apple and Eve, Carol Ransom, Full Service Contracting, Holtz Rubenstein Reminick LLP, Friendly’s Restaurant, KPMG LLP, Long Island Parent Magazine, Panera Bread, and Whole Foods.

“This event would not have been possible without the dedication of our Co-Chairs, Allison Kasson of KMPG and Melissa Connolly of Hofstra University. We thank them for their hard work,” added Ceravolo. “In addition, recognition for our Corporate Committee lead by Bonnie Porzio of Triumph Construction Corporation and Domenique Comacho Moran of Farrell Fritz, is also necessary for without their determination, our inaugural Walkathon would not have been as great a success.”
