Merillon Notre Dame CYO Lightning 11 vs. Manhasset 8

The Lightning took on a tough and up until now, unbeaten Manhasset team. The girls were up to the challenge.  The wind was swirling but the pitchers were calm, cool, and collected.  Jessica Vissichelli got us started, holding the hard hitting opponent down with 3 K’s and a couple of scoreless innings.  Sophia Leeds came on in relief and sent her first 6 batters back to the dugout, striking out 3 and fielding 3 plays including a diving catch and 2 outs with partner Mariella Facibene, who played a solid first base.  Natalie Patrey was again in control behind the plate, playing nice aggressive ball.  The big bats of Sophia L. 2H (double) 2RBI,  Jessica V. 2H RBI, Mariella F. 2H, Hannah Kareff 2H, Monique Vavro 2H sent the ball sailing and driving in several runs. Natalie P. and Isabella Fazzolari took great cuts at the plate and tallied a hit and a RBI a piece.  Casey Sanders and Rachel Moss walked, stole bases and scored runs.  Defensively, the girls stepped it up by never giving up on the play and under very blustery conditions, making several outstanding plays.

Plain & Fancy Landscaping Bears 1 vs.Dominick’s Deli Pride 0

Plain & Fancy Landscaping Bears 2 vs.Dominick’s Deli Pride 1

The Bears and the Pride played a home and home series this week. Strong pitching and flawless defense led the way for the Bears.  In the first game Louis Plomitallo and Christian Carrick held the Pride batters in check giving up just one hit.  Rock solid catching by RJ Donohue helped this cause.  Smooth plays in the field by Anthony Lanzilotta, Nevin Nambiar and Jake Seker.  Mike Lopez continues to hit the ball hard.  Web gem of game goes to Landon Phillips who made a game ending catch of a line drive to second base. Special thanks to our call up Jake G.  The second game of the series was just as exciting as the first with Peter Tagios and Michael Varrone on the hill.  Solid plays at third by Landon kept the Pride batters off the bases.  Once again nice hitting by Mike L and Lou led to the Bears runs. Go Bears!

igi’s Pizza Marlins vs. Dr. Barbaro Phillies

The Marlins brought their A-game to the ballpark on Thursday against the Phillies.  The contest was close during the early innings, which featured strong pitching by Kenny Gensch and a snared liner by shortstop Elliot Weissman.  David Klebanow and Jake Blancher got the offense started with base hits off an up-and-coming Phillies pitcher.  The game turned on a bases-loaded, two-out play by first baseman Eric Madenberg, who backhanded a grounder headed for the hole and beat the runner to the bag.  That fueled a big inning, including Chris Bruccoleri with a two-RBI hit and Charlie Goodwin with a shot down the third base line.  The bats stayed hot the next inning with Paul Fadoul drawing an RBI base-on-balls.  Sean O’Connor singled up the middle, then stole second and third before scoring on Ivan Vidaich’s clutch hit.  Dylan Kareff singled in the Marlins final run in a well-earned victory.

Grant Thornton Brewers vs.

The Piccolo Italian Gourmet Diamondbacks

The Brewers got excellent pitching from Jordan Siedenberg and Philip Menist each pitching two innings and struck out four and five respectively.  The shortstop/second base combinations of Sean O’Leary and Michael Kurre and Alessandro Lacera and Jordan Siedenberg made super defensive plays at second base almost turning double plays.  Ryan Cloonan and Matthew Shen did a great job playing catcher and each reached base twice with one RBI apiece.  Daniel Mattei had a nice sharp hit producing a run.  It was an excellent game played by both the Brewers and Diamondbacks.

Salmon Limousine Services Rays 13 vs Ridgewood Savings Bank Mariners 6

The Rays avoided a two-game losing streak and returned to the win column with a well-played 13-6 victory over the marvelous Mariners.  The Rays received an outstanding starting pitching performance by Jordan “Get me to Philly” Greiff, who went 4 strong innings in his longest outing of the season, and finished his outing by striking out the side in the 4th inning.  Jordan was followed to the mound by his “J&J” teammate, Joey Jacobs, who went the rest of the way and threw strike after strike.  The Rays’ bats also came alive, highlighted by back-to-back, and belly-to-belly, mammoth HRs from Jordan Greiff and Michael Telsey.  Additional offensive stars included Jared Schwartz, Jacob “I never met a high pitch I didn’t like” Seidenberg, Jack Tucker (robbed of his 4th HR of the season) and Joey Jacobs.  After the previous game where the Rays struck out 11 times, in this game almost every batter put the bat on the ball.  The Rays also displayed heads-up baserunning by taking the extra base when possible and also with steals of home by Jack Tucker and Brian Volk.  Keeping the Mariners off the scoreboard took some excellent defense from Jared Schwartz (4 solid innings behind the plate), Brian Volk (nice play to start the game), Ryan Hodes (great pick at 3B), Jared Hodes and Karan Thadhani (both strong play in the OF).

Salmon Limousine Services Rays 13 vs

Iron Horse Transport Blue Jays 12

The Rays survived a nail-biter in a thrilling 13-12 victory over the brawling Blue Jays.  After jumping out to an early 8-0 lead, thanks to powerful 3-run home runs by Michael Telsey and Brian Volk, the Rays saw the Blue Jays chip away at the lead until they tied it at 11 after 4 innings.  Helping the Rays score runs were Matt O’Connor (a hustling triple to ignite a 2-out rally), Jack Tucker, Jared Schwartz (beautiful opposite field triple), Jacob Seidenberg (big 2-out RBI), Joey Jacobs and the brother tandem of Ryan Hodes and Jared Hodes, with the “Hodes Boys” combining on a huge 2-out, bases-empty run in the top of the 6th to give the Rays a much-needed insurance run.  Despite giving up 12 runs in the game, the Rays flashed some big-time leather, keeping the Blue Jays from scoring even more runs.  The strong defense was highlighted by Brian Volk (2 crucial plays gunning out runners at first in the later innings), Jared Schwartz (a rock behind the plate yet again), Jack Tucker (basket catch early in the game), Matt O’Connor (nailing a runner at the plate with the bases loaded) and Karan Thadhani (consistently strong).  On the mound, the Rays were led by Jacob Seidenberg (who battled through 3 tough innings) and Matt O’Connor (who also toughed it out to close out the game).
