Time to Register for Summer Camps

It is time to begin registering for the Recreation Department’s summer camps. The Department is offering a multitude of sport and cultural camps for children, ages 3-1/2 and up, who are residents of the Village of Garden City. Registration is by mail only. Information on the camps we offer can be found on the new website, www.gardencityrecreation.org or you can visit our office at 108 Rockaway Ave., to pick up a summer camp brochure.

Summer Adult Tennis Lessons

The Garden City Recreation Department will conduct evening tennis lessons for adults who are residents of the Incorporated Village of Garden City. The lessons will be held at the Garden City Community Park Tennis Facility and will run one evening a week. There will be a maximum of four players on a court. The dates, times, and fees will be as follows:

Session 2

July 5-July 29 Mon., Tues., Wed., 7:30-8:30 p.m. or $100 (four weeks) or Thurs. 8:30-9:30 p.m.

Session 3

Aug. 2-26 Mon.,Tues., Wed.,7:30-8:30 p.m.$100 (four weeks)or Thursday8:30-9:30 p.m.

Please visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave., to register. Payment must accompany registration. You can register for any or all of the sessions. Separate checks should be written for each session. Please make checks payable to “Inc. Village of Garden City.”

A Listing of Camps

Below is a listing of camps offered during the summer months. If you are interested in registering for any of these camps, download an application (under summer camps) from the website, www.gardencityrecreation.org, or visit the office at 108 Rockaway Ave. for a camp brochure. Registration is by mail only.

Peewee Sports Sampler

The very popular winter program will continue this summer in neighborhood parks. In this four-day program, your child will get a taste of a different sport each day as our Recreation staff takes them through some fun skills and drills. The group will then make an arts and crafts project to take home. Children ages 4-5, who are residents of the Village of Garden City are invited to register for this fun program.

When: July 12-15, Nassau Haven Park

Time: 2 to 3:15 p.m.

Cost: $60

Preschool Camp

The Pre-school Camp is a fun way for children, ages 3.5 to 5 years old who are residents of the village, to spend the summer. Children who attend this camp must be 3.5 years by the start of the session. Arts and crafts, music, nature, and stories will fill the two-hour class, run by Pat Leonenko, St. Joseph’s Preschool teacher.

Peewee Tennis

PeeWee Tennis is offered to children who are village residents ages 4 to 6. Eligibility is determined by the child’s age at the start of the session. Skills are learned by fun and easy to do drills taught by our tennis staff. Each child may register for a maximum of two sessions.

When: Session A: June 28 -July 1

Session B: July 6 – 9

Session C: July 12 – 15

Session D: July 19 – 22

Session E: July 26 – 29

Session F: August 2-5 – 1 p.m. only

Session G: August 9-12 – 1 p.m. only

Tennis Camps for Ages 6–18

The Recreation Department’s Tennis Camp program offers children ages six and up an opportunity to learn or advance their tennis skills while working with experienced tennis pros in a fun setting. Camps are set by age and children will be grouped according to ability within their camp. All sessions are held at the Community Park Tennis Center. The age of the child at the start of the session will determine which session the child may attend and proof of age may be required. Please read the information below to determine which camp your child is eligible to attend.

Please Note: As registration has already started, some of the sessions might already be filled. Each child may sign up for a maximum of two sessions

Equipment needed: flat, soled sneakers and a tennis racket.

All Camps will follow the same session dates:

Novice Camp

 

For ages 6 and 7. This camp will teach serving, rallying, and the basics of a tennis game, keeping it fun for the younger tennis set.

Time: 2:30–4 p.m.

Cost: $75

Junior Camp

For ages 8–11. For all levels of experience, this 2-¼ hour camp will group players by ability so that everyone can move to the next level.

Time: 10 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Cost: $90

Junior Camp Plus

For the child aged 8–11 that is looking for a full day of tennis. This camp will provide tennis instruction in the morning, followed by lunch and a special activity, then ending the day with tennis matches. Children must bring their lunch to this camp.

Time: 10 a.m.-2:15 p.m.

Cost: $200

Senior Camp

For the student, ages 12 to 18, who is either looking to learn to play tennis or would like to get better at the game.

Time: 2:30–4 p.m.

Cost: $75

U.S. Sports Institute’s Sport Squirts

The department is pleased to work in conjunction with the U.S. Sports Institute to offer several new programs this summer. One of these new programs is geared for the younger child. The Sports Squirts Program has been designed to introduce children ages 3 to 5 to a variety of sports in a safe, structured environment. All games and activities will encompass hand/eye coordination, balance, agility and movement – all key factors to the early development of children in sport. We will offer this program on the St. Paul’s fields for two weeks during the summer. All sessions will run for 1 and a half hours. Please note – a separate application is needed for this camp.

When: July 19–23, from 9–10:30 a.m.; or 10:45–12:15 p.m. Please List Time Wanted.

Aug. 30 – Sept. 3 from 4–5:30 p.m.

Cost: $99

Youth Soccer Camp

This instructional program will be offered for boys and girls, ages 6 through 12. Youngsters must be 6 by the start of the camp and entering first grade in September 2008 in order to register for this camp. Proof of age will be required. This camp will be held at Community Park.

The two-hour session will run from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m., at a cost of $75 and will focus on individual skill development. The five-hour session will run from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at a cost of $160. The five-hour session will include an hour lunch break and recreation session supervised by the Soccer Camp Staff, to be followed by full field games. The purpose of the program is to provide a fun-filled soccer learning experience incorporating the values of sportsmanship. Safe playing techniques and team cooperation will also be stressed.

Equipment Needed: Cleats or sneakers, shin guards, and a soccer ball and lunch with drink if attending full-day program.

When: Week of July 12-15; Week of Aug. 2-5; Week of Aug. 9-12

Where: Garden City Community Park

Time: 9:30-11:30 a.m.; or 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Fee: $75 morning

Cost: $160 full day

Girls’ Volleyball Camp

This camp will provide instruction in skills necessary to compete in the sport of volleyball. The children will learn proper techniques in serving, hitting, and passing and well as the aspects of the game. This camp will be held in St. Paul’s Field House and is open to any resident of the Village of Garden City, who is entering grades seven through 12 in September.

When: Girls’ Volleyball Camp July 12-15, 9–11:30 a.m.

Where: St. Paul’s Fieldhouse

Cost: $100

Youth Basketball Camp

The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting a Youth Basketball Camp for boys and girls who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City and entering first through sixth grades in September 2010. Come join us and learn what it takes to pass, dribble and shoot in this camp. The purpose of this program is to provide instruction in self improvement, basketball fundamentals, team play, group cooperation, and most important of all, fun!

When: Week of June 28 – July 1

Where: St. Paul’s Field House

Time: 8:30–10:30 a.m. for children entering first and second grades

11 a.m.–1 p.m. for children entering third through sixth grades

Fee: $75

Boys and Girls Lacrosse Camp

For children entering first through sixth grades in September 2010. Here is an opportunity for youngsters, who are residents of the Village of Garden City, to learn the techniques of catching, throwing, scooping, and shooting through fun drills. They will also learn the rules of the game by scrimmaging. This is a basic camp where no experience is necessary and equipment is provided.

When: Week of July 6 – 9 (Tuesday to Friday)

Where: Stewart Field

Time: 8:30–10:30 a.m. for children entering first and second grades

11 a.m.–1 p.m. for children entering third through sixth grades

Fee: $75

Field Hockey Camp

The Recreation Department will conduct a Summer Field Hockey Camp for girls entering grades four through seven who are residents of the Village of Garden City.

 The camp will focus on individual skill development and the rules of the game, as well as the importance of playing together as a team. Equipment will be supplied.

When: Week of July 19–22

Where: Community Park

Time: 9:30 a.m.–noon

Fee: $90

Yoga for Youngsters

The Recreation Department’s certified yoga instructor will offer yoga classes for boys and girls who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City, ages 6-14. Children attending this program will learn movements, postures, and breathing techniques, which will help with relaxation, self-awareness, and fitness. This program will be offered in two different formats (listed below).

Weekly class: This program will be offered every Wednesday morning for six weeks beginning July 7. This one-hour class is open to any resident ages 6–11.

Where: Senior Center on Golf Club Lane

Time: 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Fee: $50

One-Week Workshop

When: Week of Aug. 16-19

Where: St. Paul’s Cluett Hall

Time: 9–10 a.m. for ages 6-9; and 10:15–11:30 a.m. for ages 10-14

Fee: $40

Theatre Workshop

The resident thespian will conduct a Theatre Workshop for children, ages 6–13, who are residents of the Village of Garden City. Studying acting helps develop social and personal skills. It also increases poise and confidence. During these workshops, the children will learn drama exercises, improvisation, and staging while having fun.

When: Week of June 28-July 1, 10-13 years, from 10:30–11:30 a.m.;

Week of July 6-9 (Tuesday–Friday), 6–9 years, from 9:30-10:30 a.m.; and 10-13 years from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Mad Science Camp

Mad Science of Long Island is a company that provides a wonder learning experience in a camp setting. Residents of the Village of Garden City, ages 7–11, are encouraged to attend. The topics and details for each camp are listed below. For any Science Camp, checks should be made payable directly to “Mad Science of Long Island.”

Session One Topic:

Robots and Reactions

Build your very own robot and learn the incredible things that robots can do. Create your own scientific reactions while learning about the nuts and bolts of the Universe.

When: Week of July 26 – 29

Where: St. Paul’s Senior Center

Time: 1 to 4 p.m.

Fee: $169, plus a $30 supply fee

Session Two Topic:

Secret Agent Lab — Forensics

Focus on the science of forensics in this hands-on look at crime scenes. Campers will use science to connect the dots and help sniff out the suspects as they learn about the science of sleuthing!

When: Week of August 16 – 19

Where: St. Paul’s Senior Center

Time: 1 to 4 p.m.

Fee: $169

Session Three Topic

Science in Motion

Science and engineering go hand-in-hand as children discover what machines and nature have in common. This camp is open to ages 6–11.

When: Week of Aug. 23–26

Where: St. Paul’s Senior Center

Time: 1 to 4 p.m.

Computer Workshops For Kids

For ages 8-12. The Computer Workshops are run by Sharper Training Solutions, a company that we have used for years with the senior population. The children’s program will cover topics that are useful in everyday life and enjoyable to the age group.

For the older child. Each topic will finish in their two-hour time block. Feel free to pick and choose your topics, or sign up for all four workshops.

Fee: $20 per class, all four classes for $75

U.S. Sports Institute Multi-sport Camp for Ages 5-14

The department is pleased to work in conjunction with the U.S. Sports Institute to offer several new programs this summer. Experience over 15 different sports in one week in a fun and exciting setting. A sampling of sports offered are cricket, bocce, rugby, soccer, handball, and baseball. The camp is divided into a half- or full-day camp as follows:

When: Week of Aug. 30–Sept. 3

Where: St. Paul’s Fields

Half-day camp for ages 5–7: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Cost: $169

This camp gives the younger participants the experience of 12 sports in a week. Instruction will be given in each sport culminating in a game situation. After a half-hour lunch break, the children will return to participate in USSI’s “Olympic Games” and World Cup.

Full-day camp for ages 7–14: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cost: $189

Participants in this camp will receive all of the above plus several additional sports and challenges. Please note: A separate application is need for this camp.
