Mayor’s Report: June 11, 2010

Memorial Day Observance

On Memorial Day, the trustees and I had the honor of attending the parade and Memorial Day Ceremony, which was held in front of the Garden City Middle School. I would like to commend the efforts of the William Bradford Turner Post No. 265 and the American Legion Auxiliary under the leadership of Commandeer John C. Donovan and President John Nedelka. I would also like to congratulate the Grand Marshal of the ceremony, Dr. Robert Scott, president of Adelphi University. Please keep all service personnel who serve our country proudly, and their families, in your thoughts and prayers.

Opening of the Garden City Swimming Pool’s 54th Season

During the week of May 3, the Village mailed copies of the 2010 Splash, the Garden City Pool Newsletter containing the Pool membership applications to each residence in Garden City. This marks the annual countdown to the opening of the Pool on June 12. Please read the edition of Splash and familiarize yourself with all of the special events that are planned for the Pool, as well as all the membership categories. All pool applications should be mailed to: The Garden City Pool, 52 Cherry Valley Avenue, Garden City, New York 11530, their phone number at the Pool Office is 483-1714. If you did not receive your copy and would like to download a pool application, you can do so by visiting the Recreation Department’s website: www.gardencityrecreation.org.

Village Tax Bills

The Village mailed tax bills earlier this week to residents and their banks. The first half of Village taxes are due during the month of June and will be delinquent and subject to a penalty if payment is not made by July 1.

If you have a question, please call the Tax Department at Village Hall at 465-4156 between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m

Water Rates Increased

Following extensive discussion and consideration, during the preparation of the Incorporated Village’s 2010/2011 budget, at the April 15 Board of Trustees meeting, the board increased the water rates effective June 1. As residents are aware, the water budget is funded solely by revenue derived by its consumers, not from the general village taxes. The increase of approximately 5 percent is necessary due to the extensive capital project investments made in adding treatment facilities to our system in order to assure the delivery of pure water to our residents.

Board of Trustees Meetings

The next board of trustees meeting will be held on Thursday, June 17. The meeting dates for the summer will be as follows: July 15 and Aug. 19. The meetings will be held in the boardroom at Village Hall and will begin at 8 p.m.

Village’s Website

I encourage residents to periodically utilize the village’s website for information regarding the village’s operations, as well as items of seasonal and special interest. The address is www.garden cityny.net. One item that is listed on the village’s home page under the Heading of Administration is a sub-heading “Water Billing Information,” which includes information on water reading.
