Farmingdale Varsity Golf Is Double Champion for Second Year

Record breaking scores propelled the Farmingdale Golf Team to win their second consecutive Nassau County and Long Island Championships this year. An unfortunate error omitted the team’s page from their yearbook, so it is with great pride that the school congratulate seniors Kurt Brey, James Darcy and Brandon Romano along with team members Kyle Brey, Matthew Lowe, and Michael Zelanzy for not only winning, but for breaking a Nassau County record, coming in first place in Nassau County, leading the tournament by 52 strokes and setting a Nassau County record for the lowest total team strokes, 759 for the two-day tournament. They also went on to beat Kings Park in the Long Island Championship, winning by 25 strokes at the Bethpage Black Course making it 32 straight matches without a loss.

Kurt Brey started his varsity golf career in seventh grade, Romano followed in eighth grade. Both hold titles as a NYS Sectional Champion at Robert Trent Jones Golf Course, Romano for ’09, and Brey for ’10. Together as co-captains, they set the bar for the unprecedented work ethic that helped Coach John Berardi’s dream team break countless records. Along with other team members Kyle Brey, Matthew Burnett, Joseph DiLauro, Thomas Ferrigno, Kyle Garry, Katherine Gilleran, Michael Hofmann, Joseph Kessler, Zachary Levatino, Bryan LoPinto, Matthew Lowe, Thomas Maier, Michael Saccone, Jonathan Smalkin, Michael Zalazny, and Robert Zeno, the Farmingdale Varsity Golf Team went undefeated, 14 and 0, for their second year.

Senior teammates Kurt Brey, James Darcy, and Brandon Romano along with junior Michael Zelanzy, joined by Matthew Lowe and Kyle Brey from Howitt Middle School, were the top seeded players to go on to the counties and Long Island championship.

This team had a special quality and worked well together as a team to achieve success for the Farmingdale High School sports program. They had a special magic that will never be forgotten.

Good luck to seniors Kurt Brey and Brandon Romano who will continue to play golf together at Dowling College and to James Darcy who will be playing golf for Delhi College.

Hats off to the entire Farmingdale High School Varsity Golf Team for a fantastic season. Job well done!
