Closing Ceremonies Impressive
We completed our school year on June 25 sending all our students and staff home for a safe and healthy summer. Many of us had the privilege over the last few weeks of school, myself included, to attend four kindergarten graduations, four awards day ceremonies and four sixth-grade moving on ceremonies. Each event was touching and put together with class and emotion by the teachers and building principals at each of the four elementary schools. A special thank you to each of the PTA groups for providing the refreshments at each of these events.
On the last day of school, I also had the pleasure of attending the UPK graduation at Harbor Child Care. It was nice to watch the incoming kindergarten students end their Pre-K journey in a song and dance.
On June 29 the central office administrative team held their annual retreat focused on the completion of the first year of our district’s five year plan and looking at next year’s goals and activity.
This morning, we began our Summer School Academic Program funded (funded by grants) for Kindergarten Readiness, English Language Learners and our special education students at the New Hyde Park Road School. We were greeted by many eager and happy students with a thirst for knowledge. We also began the Summer Recreational Program, also housed at New Hyde Park Road School, with many energetic and enthusiastic students. This program is a fee-based program paid by parents.
We will be having an Academic Open House on Thursday, July 22 from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. at the NHP Road School which will be open to all families.
This afternoon the board of education held their retreat, focusing on the Building Facilities Condition Survey, district goals and district positions. Good discussions took place and tentative timelines and plans were made.
On July 12 – 14 a team consisting of Diane Weiss, principal of Manor Oaks; Mindy Simon and Kathleen McKennett, reading teachers at the NHP Road School, and myself will be presenting at the National Reading Styles Conference in New Orleans via the Title IIA Grant. We will be presenting on our successful Tier II Reading Styles intervention to meet the needs of students as part of our Response to Intervention Program. Many of our teachers are also busy taking Model Schools, Nassau Trac and District Staff Development offerings this summer as well.
