Martha Offerman of Bayville called to ask, “Where are the letters to the editor? Nobody has anything to complain about?”
It was an interesting phone call and very timely. We had been trying to research a story about a letter from Solomon Townsend II written in Colonial times to his sisters at Raynham Hall Museum, that was written from China. We had transcribed the letter from the original handwritten letter and were trying to find out where the original was located.
All we remembered was that it was difficult to read and fascinating.
While looking through the Enterprise Pilot from July to December of 1997 we noticed there were a lot of letters to the editor. It made us think…
Therefore Ms. Offerman’s phone call was particularly auspicious.
Just where are the letters to the editor?
We opined – a bad habit of wanting to answer every question that comes up – that maybe with editorials in the Pilot, people think that is the “opinion of the day”. Which is untrue. We just comment on what gives us a concern as we put the paper together on a Monday.
We truly enjoy other people’s opinions and welcome the opportunity to publish them.
We do however ask that people sign the letters and give us a phone number for verification. At times we have gotten unsigned letters and that is a problem. We feel we need a name to stand behind an opinion.
Hopefully you will consider giving us your opinion. Maybe everything is going along as you expect and you enjoy the ride. Maybe you want to share some life experience with our readers. Maybe that would be a way to ignite your pens!
Maybe we should assign topics – a response from readers.

Ms. Offerman said she is enjoying her life. She is going to spend some time in Greece; she has 16 grandchildren to enjoy; her son is being married on Nov. 19 to a girl who grew up opposite them. “Things are good,” she said.
She added she would think to see if there was a Letter to the Editor laying dormant within her.
