Local Runners Score In ‘Sprint for the Feinstein Institute’

Shari Klarfeld and Richard Kleiman of Plainview, and Arthur Koppelman and Bert Jablon of Syosset all won age group awards in the August 14 ‘Sprint for the Feinstein Institute’ 5 Kilometer Run, held at Sands Point.

Klarfeld was the first place finisher in the women’s 25-29 age group with a time of 21:00, Kleiman earned second place honors in the 60-64 age group in 23:41, Koppelman was the third place finisher in the 65-69 age group in 25:53, and Jablon was the first place finisher in the 80-84 age group in 36:19.

Greater Long Island Running Club Race Director Abe Bernstein went all out to ensure the success of this event, as his way of saying “thank you” to the good people from North Shore-LIJ’s Feinstein Institute, who got him back on his feet and back on the roads and track after a bout with lymphoma. Genentech (“In Business for Life”) was once again a sponsor this year, and their support was most welcome.

Special thanks go to the “Friends of the Sands Point Preserve” for making the beautiful Sands Point facility available for the event, and to Preserve Manager Matthew Rocchio for his enthusiastic cooperation.

The course used for the event is not a “personal best course.” The trail in the third mile is not easy to navigate and the hill leading up from the trail is particularly difficult. This was also not an easy event to stage. Mindy Davidson, who has devoted so much time to major GLIRC events this summer, extended herself still one more time to put together the volunteer effort that ensured the smooth running of the event, Tony Toro handled the timing and scoring chores, Fred von der Heydt put in an incredible effort to making the logistics seem easy, and Terry Bisogno once again excelled as the announcer. Thanks go to everyone.

Donations to the Feinstein Institute are still most welcome – and can be sent c/o Abe Bernstein, 54 Trumbull Road, Manhasset, New York 11030.
