Police: Former Legislator Arrested for Stalking
On the morning of Sept. 2, the Nassau County Police Second Squad reported the arrest of State Senate candidate Dave Mejias for “stalking that occurred on Sept. 1 at noon in Matinecock.”
According to detectives, “The 34-year-old ex-girlfriend of the defendant, David Mejias, 39, of Farmingdale, was driving her vehicle on Piping Rock Road when she noticed that Mejias was following her in his vehicle. The defendant passed her and abruptly stopped, causing the victim to stop her vehicle. Mejias exited his vehicle and approached the victim yelling and screaming at her. When the victim drove away from the scene the defendant continued to follow her. She eventually was able to elude him and reported the incident to police.”
The defendant is charged with Menacing 2nd Degree, Stalking 3rd Degree and Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree. He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Sept. 2.
According to Carole Trottere, Communications Director for Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice, Judge Quinn set bail at “1K over 500 on each of the two dockets,” and “orders of protection were issued for both victims.” She also stated that Mejias is represented by attorney Miguel Alvarado,
Trottere also issued the following statement: “The District Attorney’s office requested that a special prosecutor handle this case due to a personal relationship that exists between the victim, her family and the district attorney. It is this office’s opinion that by appointing a special prosecutor, the office can easily eliminate any chance that there could exist even the mere appearance of impropriety surrounding the future handling of this case.”
While the Mejias campaign did not immediately return calls from Anton Newspapers requesting comment, his campaign spokesperson Akeem Henry did send out an e-mail stating that a press conference scheduled for the morning of Sept. 2, where Mejias was scheduled to receive endorsements, had been cancelled.
Mejias is running in the Sept. 14 primary against Plainview resident Francesca Carlow for the 6th Senate District seat.
