Shelby Coates Knows Oyster Bay

Shelby Coates, called to say he is now living in Oyster Bay and getting to know the area a little bit better. He has been a familiar face in Oyster Bay over the years. As for “How well do you know the area,” he said, “It’s Sagamore Yacht Club with a view of the water, probably looking toward Mill Neck, not Centre Island.” He aced it!

Barbara McQuade called to ID the photo. She said, “It’s taken at the Sagamore Yacht Club, looking into Oyster Bay Harbor.” Ms. McQuade said she was born and raised in the area; and recently moved back from Maryland. “I see a lot of the Sagamore Yacht Club,” she said.

Tony Pilla now of Anniston, Alabama emailed to say, “Thanks for the nice article that you put in this week’s paper (Sept. 9). Just a guess, but I think this week’s picture might be the Sagamore “Y” Club overlooking the bay. I had a senior moment and can’t spell the “Y” word.” In case you haven’t guessed the word is yacht.

Being a senior means you have to be very creative in your communications.

Christopher Benny Knows Oyster Bay!

Christopher Benny emailed the correct answer for the Sept. 2 issue’s mystery-mystery picture on Friday, Sept. 10 at about 1:30 p.m. which on a normal week would have made the column. Unfortunately we had an early deadline and by the time we opened the email, the whole paper had been finished and signed off on.

Mr. Benny said, “It looks like the parking lot next to town hall. The building in the background looks like the building where Dottie Brandt had her business, Your Doggie Salon,” he said.

He is of course correct! The Enterprise Pilot had its office next door for a few years. There was a little garden area in back with a redwood picnic table and we always meant to have lunch out there – things being what they are, we didn’t.

More From Mr. Pilla

Tony Pilla also said in an email, about the Aug. 27 mystery picture on the Internet – “Good for Leven Ashby for knowing the picture of the old senior garden at OBHS.

“I should have guessed the picture also since I sold ice cream in there during my senior year, 1954. This helped me to build credits toward our senior trip to Washington D.C.

“Thanks again for the wonderful pictures,” Tony Pilla of Anniston, Ala.

That senior trip to Washington, D.C. was a big event. Especially in those days – when people were still dressing up and looking wonderful, as opposed to today – when we are looking comfortable. We ran a copy of the trip picture some years ago.

Mr. Pilla also wrote us earlier this month, about identifying the OBHS gym rafters in a mystery picture. He said, “I was on the basketball and football team in 1953 and 1954. I spent a lot of time in the old gym. Glad I could help with some information.”

And, In Conclusion

Loyal mystery picture reader Billy Minicozzi suggested the Sept. 9 photograph was taken at the Crescent Club in Bayville. That is a great suggestion since there too, you see the water and large market umbrellas to shade guests. On a sports note, Billy is looking forward to the football season and a win for the Jets.

Thanks to all the great responders – the more the merrier!
