Garden City High School Student Named 33rd News 12 Scholar Athlete

Brian Fischer, a senior at Garden City High School who will be attending Harvard next year, was recently named a News 12 Scholar Athlete. Brian is a two-sport athlete playing on the award-winning varsity football and lacrosse teams, and brings Garden City’s total honored News 12 Scholar Athletes to 33 since the program’s inception. Brian Fischer’s segment was aired on the television network on Wednesday, Dec. 1 during their evening news broadcast.

Head Lacrosse Coach Steve Finnell, himself a Garden City graduate who has been teaching ninth- and 12th grade social studies for 10 years, nominated Brian for the honor. “Brian is the consummate scholar athlete who excels in the classroom and on the athletic field,” commented coach Finnell. “He’s a great kid who cares about his teammates. Brian works very hard on the field, but it is not uncommon for him to be talking about his school work — how others are preparing for a test, how they did on a recent paper —before and after practice.”

In his spare time, Brian assists in the Special Olympics, Challenger Basketball for children with disabilities, and helps organize food donations for those in need at the holidays.

A friend from childhood, teammate Stephen Jahelka, will be joining Brian at Harvard next year playing on the university’s lacrosse team. “It’s very unusual to have Harvard select two senior athletes to attend and play for the school,” Coach Finnell remarked.

The district salutes Brian Fischer and extends its congratulations to this outstanding scholar athlete on his accomplishments.
