Winter Family Programs Announced

Our Recreation Department is please to announce a series of family programs this winter sponsored in part by Garden City Rams Girls’ Lacrosse. GC Rams Girls’ Lacrosse and Garden City Recreation are working together to offer the following performances in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall:

Sunday, January 23: Movie Shrek, Forever After

Sunday, February 13: Plaza Theatrical Production of Sleeping Beauty

Wednesday, February 23: Movie Disney’s The Princess and the Frog

Sunday, March 6: Magic Show

All programs begin at 1 p.m. Please check this column for further information as we draw closer to each performance.

Garden City Recreation would again like to thank Gary O’Connor, Henry Beihoff, and the members of the Garden City Rams Girls’ Lacrosse program for their generous contribution to our winter series.

Family Fun Time on Sundays

On Sunday afternoons beginning Jan. 9, the St. Paul’s Field House will be open for “Family Fun” for village families. This open time provides the opportunity for families to enjoy various gym activities in an indoor environment. The gym will be available for use from noon to 3:30 p.m. each Sunday until March. This time is designated for family time only. No organized practices or workouts will be allowed. Although there will be staff to monitor activity, this is not a drop off program. We ask the elementary- aged children be accompanied by an adult. For the safety of our users, no lacrosse or baseball will be allowed.

Family Movie Day

On Sunday, Jan. 23, the Recreation Department will show the movie Shrek-Forever After in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall at 1 p.m. This movie, running 93 minutes, is rated G. Admission is free and snacks will be served at a nominal charge.

Come Pick Up Your Santa Photos

 

The Recreation Department will hold the Santa photos taken before Christmas until the end of January. Please come in to our office at 108 Rockaway Ave. to pick up your photos.

Additional Sessions of Mad Science After School Program Added

 

Due to an increase in popularity, we have added two new dates for “Mad Science.” Mad Science is a one-hour after school program that incorporates various topics such as Ph, working in a lab, and dry ice into fun workshops but will entertain while educating. All classes are held at St. Paul’s Senior Center and run for six weeks. The cost for this program is $95. The schedule of classes is:

Kindergarten to Grade Two: Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Grades Three to Five: Thursday at 4 p.m.

Youth Tennis Instruction Began January 3

 

The Recreation Department is pleased to announce the start of registration for our Winter 2011 Indoor Tennis Program for Children at the Community Park Tennis Center. The lesson plan creates a fun learning experience with all ages and levels in mind. Registration has been ongoing and space is limited. Classes started the week of Jan. 3. To register for any of the classes, please visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave.

Zumba and Adult Ballet

The following dance and exercise classes for adults will be offered by the Recreation Department:

Ballet Tuesdays at 9:15 a.m., 12 weeks $108

Zumba Tuesdays at 7:45 p.m., 12 weeks $108

Zumba Thursdays at 9:15 a.m., 12 weeks $108

Zumba Saturdays at 9 a.m., 10 weeks $90

All classes are led by Felicia Lovaglio, director of the Dance Conservatory and adjunct professor at Adelphi. Each class is one hour long and will be held in Cluett Hall. All classes began the week of Jan. 11. To register for any of these classes, fill out the form below and return to the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. Please make your check payable to “Village of Garden City.”

Second Session of Adult Yoga

It’s time to register for our very popular adult yoga classes, which will begin in January. Connie McKnight, our certified yoga instructor, has designed adult yoga classes with all ages in mind. Each class is one hour long. All classes are held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul’s and began the week of Jan. 3. Any resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City is invited to join these relaxing classes.

The course schedule is as follows:

Mondays at 7:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 3: 12 classes for $72

Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. beginning Jan. 5: 13 classes for $78

Winter Floor Hockey

The Garden City Recreation Department is proud to announce it will once again offer a Floor Hockey Program this winter at Field House at St. Paul’s. The program will be open to village residents between the ages of 5-14 on select Fridays according to the following schedule:

Ages 5-7: 6:15 to 7:15 p.m.

Ages 8-10: 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Ages 11-14: 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

On the following dates: Jan. 21; and Feb. 4, 18.

The cost of this program will be $25. All participants are required to wear the following equipment at all times: Hockey Helmet with a cage, hockey gloves, shin pads, sneakers, and hockey stick.

Please make selections carefully as fees are not returnable. To register: Pick up an application at the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. or download one from our website at www.gardencityrecreation.org. You can also make your own by listing your child’s name, address, home and emergency phone number, birth date, grade, and the session for which you are registering. Mail or drop off all information with full payment to the Garden City Recreation Department at 108 Rockaway Ave. Please make all checks payable to the “Inc. Tennis Ultimate Workout for Adults

The Recreation Department also offers a tennis workout program at Community Park Tennis Facility that drills experienced tennis players. This 1-1/2 hour class is available on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. at a cost of $249. The program runs for nine weeks. To register for this great workout, visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. Payment must accompany registration.

Open Gym for Middle/High Schoolers

The Field House is open beginning Tuesday, Dec. 7 for grades six–12 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursday for basketball and volleyball. The Field House will be monitored but no organized activities will be scheduled. This time is for students to play with their friends in a supervised setting. No organized practices and no adults will be allowed in the gym at this time.
