On Friday, April 29 the Downstate Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame will induct six athletes into its Hall of Fame.
Terry Phelan is among the honorees selected to be inducted during the organization’s 17th annual ceremony at the Melville Marriott Hotel in Melville.
In Phelan’s early years of wrestling, he enjoyed a high school career in Wantagh. He was a two-time conference champion in 1967 and 1968, capturing the Nassau County title in 1968 earning the outstanding wrestler award.
That same year, Phelan finished as the New York State runner-up; the Warriors of Wantagh also captured the state title.
He continued his wrestling career in college, and while at Farmingdale State College he captured the Region 15 Junior College Championship.
After college, Phelan began coaching at Smithtown West, Smithtown East and at William Floyd High Schools. Phelan has secured league, division, and Long Island awards as Coach of the Year.
