Board Honors Ksiasek as DAHS Valedictorian
The Division Avenue High School Cafeteria renovation project that has been delayed for months might soon have a resolution.
Board of Education President Michael Pappas announced at the Wednesday, April 13 Budget Planning Session that the board will hire an architect on Tuesday, May 10 to begin the initial phases of the undertaking. Initial blueprints are slated to be submitted for state approval on Wednesday, June 8, but there is yet to be a timetable for the estimated project completion date.
Another item on the agenda was an Energy Savings Proposal to potentially cut rising gas and heat costs.
“A short while back, I met with account representatives from National Grid,” said Levittown School District Buildings and Ground Director Michael Hahn. “At that time, we ran through energy savings initiatives that are available as well as upgrades in equipment such as boilers, resulting in energy and money savings for the district.”
The Board will continue to negotiate with National Grid and other natural gas companies to determine a fair price rate for the district’s schools.
One of the district’s finest students was also given special recognition during the event’s proceedings. Principal Francesco Ianni gave Karolina Ksiazek, a dedicated student at Division Avenue High School, a plaque for being named valedictorian of her class.
Ksiazek has a cumulative grade point average of 100.52, was a semi-finalist in the Coca-Cola Scholar’s Foundation, won a National Merit Scholarship and earned two gold medals plus a bronze at the Science Olympiad.
She is the president of the Division Avenue High School Humanitarian Club, co-president of the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance Club, plays violin in the school orchestra and works for the Citizens Campaign for the Environment.
“She is multi-talented and dedicated,” said Ianni. “She has some amazing scores on the SATs. Critical reading: 780, Math: 770, Writing: 780, for a total of 2330. She also took many AP classes and achieved the highest score in most of them.”
The Board cast a vote for Eric B. Schultz, Deborah Coates and Stephen B. Witt to be the candidates for the BOCES Board of Education and approved the BOCES Administrative Operations budget for the amount of $18,947,178.
Earlier in the meeting, a gift of five yards of clean topsoil and grass seed given by the Distinctive Land Design Company for a field at the Levittown Memorial Education Center was approved, as well as a donation of 54 ballcaps for the Salk Middle School baseball team.
The next regular Levittown School District Board of Education meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 10 at the Levittown Memorial Education Center at 150 Abbey Lane. The public session begins at 7:30 p.m. This meeting will be devoted to reports from the superintendent of schools and board members, regular agenda items of old and new business and schedules.
