Congratulations to Adelphi University’s Class of 2011

Friday, May 20, 2011, is the graduation of Adelphi University’s Class of 2011.  My colleagues on the Village Board of Trustees and I join all of the residents of our Village in extending congratulations to these outstanding young people.  They have been a credit to our community and I am sure they will continue to reflect well on Garden City as Adelphi University’s Alumni. We wish the Class of 2011 the very best and congratulate you on your many accomplishments and contributions.

NCAA DII/DIII Women’s Lacrosse Championships at Adelphi

Adelphi University is the host site of the 2011 NCAA DII/DIII Women’s Lacrosse Championships. The semi-finals and finals for both divisions will be held on Motamed Field on May 21-22. Four semi-final games will take place on Saturday, with the Division II semi-finals beginning at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. followed by the Division III semi-finals at 5:00 p.m. and 8 p.m. Two National Champions will be crowned on Sunday, the Division II National Final will take place at noon, with the Division III Title game kicking off at 3 p.m.

Participants for all games will be determined by May 15 and tickets are currently on sale at Adelphi University Performing Arts Center box office or online at http://events.adelphi.edu/NCAA-lacrosse/. Event parking will be located on campus with all lots open to the public.

Centennial Soccer Tournament

The Centennial Soccer Tournament is scheduled for May 13-15, and May 20-22, at the St. Paul’s Recreation Complex from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Residents are reminded that traffic conditions around St. Paul’s Fields (Stewart and Rockaway Avenues) will be heavy during this period.

Replacement of the Franklin Avenue Crosswalks

Phase #1 of the replacement of the Franklin Avenue decorative crosswalks has been completed and the road is open for use. Last week on Thursday, May 12, work was scheduled to resume. The crosswalks on Franklin Avenue and Stewart Avenue will be done first and will be done at night. An attempt will be made to do the side street crosswalks during the day. Similar traffic patterns should be expected during this phase as were encountered during Phase #1. This work is expected to last approximately 12-15 nights/days.

During working hours there will be lane closures and some minor detouring should be expected. During non-working hours, Franklin Avenue will be open for full use.  Please be mindful of this work and be prepared for minor delays and if possible, plan an alternative route. We appreciate your cooperation during this much needed improvement and will work to complete the project in a timely manner. If you have any questions regarding this project, please contact the Public Works Department at (516) 465-4004 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Please use caution when driving/walking past the areas that are under construction.

Fair Court Parking Field Update

Phase #1 has been completed and is now opened for use. Phase #2 is now closed and under construction. Available parking in the Fair Court Parking Field will be limited during Phase #2 due to the size of this phase. Additional parking has been added by the Police Department along the south side of Fair Court (in addition to the north side already provided), as well as further south along Lefferts Road. We ask for everyone’s patience during these next few weeks and remind everyone though temporary parking restrictions have been put in place, to please use common sense; do not park illegally, in front of fire hydrants or in front of any driveways. Work is expected to last another three weeks. The hours of construction are between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily. Please do not park your vehicles within the construction area and use caution when driving/walking in the construction area.

We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to your continued cooperation during this project. The village plans to perform the remainder of this work in a timely fashion with minimal inconvenience. If you have any questions, please contact the Garden City Public Works Department at (516) 465-4004 (Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).

Updates will continue to be provided as the work progresses.

Garage Sales – Local Law 3-1979

As a reminder to residents who are contemplating garage sales, the village has a local law, which applies to individual homeowners, as well as organizations, for the purpose of preventing such sales from becoming a blemish on our community either by frequency or by the manner in which they are conducted. The regulations may be obtained in detail at the Village Hall, but in general they cover the following:

1. A permit to conduct such sales at a fee of $30 to be obtained at least five business days prior to the date of the sale from the business office at Village Hall.

2. Not more than one permit may be issued to a person at one location during a 12-month period except that a second sale may be held immediately preceding the sale of an owner’s property.

3. The sale is limited to three consecutive days, excluding Sundays and legal holidays.

4. The hours of the sale shall be between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

5. Property offered for sale may be displayed only within the interior of the residence or to the rear of the front building line of such residence.

6. The property being sold must be owned by the persons conducting the sale.

7. One sign, not larger than two feet square, may be displayed on property not more than 24 hours prior to the sale and must be removed within 24 hours after completion of the sale.

8. Sales postponed because of inclement weather may be held after issue of another permit by the village clerk within 30 days of the initial date, without payment of an additional fee.
Board of Trustees Meetings

The next board of trustees meetings will be held on Thursday, May 19, June 2; and June 16, at 8 p.m. These meetings are held in the boardroom at Village Hall.
