Edelman Named BOE President

Several Members Appointed to Positions at Meeting

At the Hicksville Board of Education’s July Reorganization Meeting, the board voted for Anthony Edelman as president for the upcoming year.

Oaths of Office were also administered to the following trustees for the 2011-2012 school year: Kevin Carroll, Steve Culhane, Susan Powell, Maureen Lee, James Mott and Edelman.

Powell, last year’s president, was elected as the vice president while Delores Garger was elected secretary and Lee as deputy district treasurer.

As president, Edelman noted the following appointments for trustees: Facilities Committee, Culhane; Finance Committee, Mott; Policy Committee, Garger; Curriculum Committee, Powell; Parliamentarian, Powell; PTA Council Liaison, Powell; and Community Council Liaison, Edelman.

The board voted unanimously on a new resolution, which gives Superintendent Maureen Bright the authority to transfer funds for salary, Social Security and health insurance.

As per the agenda, “The Board of Education has financial obligations for salaries, Social Security and health insurance which must be met in a timely fashion; and Whereas there are sometimes deficiencies in the individual budget codes which cover these items and Whereas Education Law stipulates that the Board of Education may delegate its authority to transfer funds, within limits, to the Superintendent.”

The board also approved The Hicksville Illustrated News as an official newspaper for the upcoming year, as well as the Mid Island Times and Newsday. 

The next Hicksville Board of Education meeting will take place on Aug. 17 at 8:30 p.m. in the high school’s administration building.
