Hurricane Season
I recently received a letter from the President of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) on the subject of making preparations for the upcoming hurricane season.
The following are several of the tips for residential emergency planning that were listed. Please review them with your family:
• Develop a family plan for survival and property protection. Rehearse the plan so everyone knows what to do.
• Have flashlights, battery-operated radios and extra batteries on hand. Check the batteries to make sure they are fresh.
• Arrange now for elderly and others with special needs such as those who depend on electric life-support devices. Alert LIPA customer service and sign up for LIPA’s Critical Care Program (1-800-490-0025).
• Inventory personal property; safely secure all records and valuable documents in a watertight place.
• Put together a family hurricane evacuation kit that includes bottled water, bedding and clothing, including sleeping bags and pillows and appropriate prescription medicines.
• Ensure that enough non-perishable food and water supplies are on hand. One-gallon of water per person per day is recommended.
• Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
• Keep trees and shrubbery trimmed of dead wood.
• Determine where to move a boat in an emergency.
• Provide for pets.
If a hurricane or major tropical storm damages the region, Long Islanders are strongly cautioned to stay away from downed power lines. Immediately after the storm, outages will be evident to LIPA via its computerized control systems. LIPA’s computer systems automatically detect neighborhood service interruptions and begin the restoration process by alerting systems operators of the outage. However, should anyone notice a downed electric line or experience a service interruption, they should call 1-800-490-0075. In addition, downed wires might end up covered by tree limbs or leaves, so be careful when letting children play outside after a storm.
I have also been advised that County Executive Mangano with the Office of Emergency Management has produced a Hurricane Video, which is five minutes in length. Yield for Pedestrian in Crosswalk
Residents are again reminded of the “Yield for Pedestrian in Crosswalk” signs at the three mid-block crosswalks on Seventh Street between Franklin and Hilton avenues.
State Vehicle and Traffic Law states that motorists must yield to pedestrians who are crossing a roadway within the striped crosswalks. A motorist seeing a pedestrian entering the crosswalk must stop and permit the pedestrian to cross the street. Cars approaching the stopped vehicle from the rear are not permitted to pass.
The Garden City Police Department has been instructed to vigorously enforce these regulations and your cooperation when driving on Seventh Street will help to make these crosswalks safer for pedestrians.
A word of caution, however, to the pedestrian — do not place undue reliance on the signs or the crosswalks, even though the law requires vehicles to yield the right-of-way — they may not do so.
Parking Field #12 – East Side of Franklin Avenue Between 12th and 14th Streets Work in Parking Field #12 Continues
Phase #2 was paved and striped on Thursday, Aug. 4, completing our work in the northern half of Parking Field #12. Phase #2 was reopened to the public on Friday, Aug. 5, at which time Phase #3 (between Twelfth and Thirteenth Streets) will be closed. Alternate parking can be found on the west side of Franklin Avenue (Parking Field #11) and on the south side of Eleventh Street (Parking Field #9E). People are asked not to park in the construction zone and should exercise caution when driving or walking near any work area. We also ask that everyone take notice of any temporary parking restrictions that are posted by the Police Department as they will be enforced. We thank everyone for their patience during this much needed infrastructure improvement.

Curb, Sidewalk and Road Improvements — 2011
To date, curb and sidewalk work has been completed on Prescott Street, Plaza Road and Main Avenue. This work will continue on Fifteenth Street, Boylston Street, Tremont Street and at a few various other locations. Pavement work has started on Spruce Street, Prescott Street, Bedell Avenue and Plaza Road with Fifteenth Street and Main Avenue to follow shortly. Residents will be notified in advance of any major work beginning on their street and should expect detours and street closures during construction. Please drive with care when passing any road work. We thank you for your patience during our annual road improvement projects.
Board of Trustees’ Summer Meeting Schedule
During July and August the Board of Trustees will meet once a month. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug. 18 at 8 p.m.
