Express displeasure with debt ceiling legislation; call for jobs bill
On Wednesday, Aug. 10, up to 40 protestors from MoveOn.org gathered by Rep. Peter King’s office in Massapequa to protest his recent support for legislation that raised the nation’s debt ceiling.
“We have a simple message: we need jobs, not budget cuts,” said Bob McKee, a local MoveOn.org member. “We’re here today to say ‘enough is enough’ and demand that Representative King stop his assault on the American Dream. It is far past time that Washington end the tax giveaways to corporations and the wealthy and use that money to revitalize our community and create good jobs that we so desperately need.”
Rep. King replied with a simple one sentence statement.
“I am proud to be opposed and picketed by Moveon.org,” he said.
Participants delivered to Rep. King a new Contract for the American Dream, a plan written by over 125,000 Americans to create jobs. The Contract was released last week. Long Island residents in attendance also delivered a signed petition demanding that Rep. King act immediately to propose a jobs bill in Congress. Other attendees told of not being able to find jobs, of being laid off from former jobs, and lack of affordable health care.
