The VMAs are known for their surprises. Those include the Britney and Madonna kiss and Lady Gaga’s infamous meat dress, but this year it wasn’t about a performance or outfit but rather news– Beyonce announced she was pregnant.
The news comes after being married to one of the most famous rappers of all time, Jay-Z, for three years and shooting down rumors of a pregnancy for most of them.
She announced the news on the black carpet before the VMAs started.
She later performed in a tuxedo outfit but didn’t utter a word about the pregnancy. She did take a moment after the performance to unbutton her jacket and rub her belly as the audience applauded. Proud pop-to-be Jay-Z applauded for his wife and got a hug from Kanye West.
In other VMA news, Nicki Minaj dressed in oragami, Katy Perry took home two awards with a funky cube on her head, and Lady Gaga came as her male counterpart, a flirty man who tried to kiss Britney Spears. Spears shot her down and told her she had already done that– disappointing the audience.
One of the most memorable moments of this year’s VMAs was when Russell Brand spoke about the late Amy Winehouse and then Tony Bennett payed tribute to her with a video of what could be the last product of the late singer, a duet with Winehouse and Bennett.
