As we pass the 10th anniversary of 9/11, I can’t help recalling how long it took to pass the Zadroga Bill for first responders, which only now extends coverage to include cancer. Blame our politicians, but except that we did not hold their feet to the fire. But why should we? Perish the thought that we should pay to make things right.
A majority of Americans supported a war in Iraq, which had nothing to do with 9/11. One percent of our citizens were put in harm’s way while the rest of us went about our business. Can we be bothered worrying about returning vets?
Some of us can muster no more than an irrational fear of Muslims. We give nothing, or less than nothing, to the common good while waving the flag. We ought to be better than this.
