Obituary: Peter H. Stehli

Peter H. Stehli, 78, of Oyster Bay, died Sept. 2, 2011 peacefully, after a long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. The son of Grace and Henry Stehli, he spent much of his childhood in Locust Valley and Bayville near the beach that bears his grandfather’s name. He attended GreenVale and Buckley schools and graduated from St Paul’s School, Concord, NH, and Yale University in 1955. After serving in the U.S. Air Force he received an MBA from NYU.

Peter married Joan Phillips Thompson and later married Annabel Stearns Manley; marriages both ended in divorce. For many years Peter worked as an investment broker in New York, Florida and Europe. With Annabel, he developed the Georgiana Institute providing outreach, training and therapy for learning disabled and autistic children and support for their families. Most recently Peter managed the planned giving program at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Because of his interest in medical research, he has given his body to the Stony Brook Medical School.

He is loved and cherished by his dear friend, Ethel Woolverton, sister Maggie Kelly (Chuck), children Pam Hearne, Kitty Scharf, Hunt Stehli, Mark Stehli (Erin), Sarah Howell (Lucius), Georgie Thomas (Tom), 9 grandchildren and many family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept.17, at St John’s Church, Cold Spring Harbor. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory or St John’s Church.
