Art in the Park

Hit the Pavement for the Poor

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul will host its Third Annual Friends of the Poor Walk at Bethpage State Park to help Long Islanders in need. Every year the society hosts a walk to help support its direct aid programs, of which there are 52 facilitated within 49 LI communities. St. Vincent de Paul serves a vulnerable population including the homeless, elderly, working poor and anyone that demonstrates a genuine need. The Rockville Centre Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul encourages all Long Islanders to participate in the walk as walkers, sponsors, volunteers. If you are unable to attend, be sure to support your local Conference (St. Vincent de Paul volunteer group) through a walker or team pledge. Contributions of any size are welcome and appreciated. JC Café

The JC Café at Farmingdale United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. (corner of Grant Ave.), Farmingdale, will host Servants of the Shepherd, a well-known contemporary Christian music group that has been entertaining audiences for over 20 years. Founding members George Cooper and Alex Accardo credit their success to their spiritual beliefs and faith and say they sing what they believe and believe what they sing. They have shared their talents in composing, arranging, producing, singing and mentoring in many different venues including coffee houses, worship settings, fund-raising events and concert sites. Doors open at 7 p.m. with complimentary coffee and desserts and the program begins at 7:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $5. Step Forward to Cure TSC Walkathon

Farmingdale Boot Camp

Will be starting at 7a.m. at the Farmingdale High School Football Field. It is sponsored by Fit Body Boot Camp of Farmingdale and Priestley Chiropractic. Free and open to residents 18 and over that live in the Farmingdale School District. Come prepared with water to do sprints, calisthenics and obstacle courses for 45 minutes and stretching with motivational and educational discussion by the sponsors at the end. Beginners welcome. POW/MIA Candlelight Ceremony

NC Executive Edward P. Mangano will preside at the annual Candlelight Ceremony observing National POW/MIA Recognition Day at 6:45 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial in Eisenhower Park. “We honor the sacrifice of prisoners of war and those who have gone missing under our nation’s flag and the families that have been left behind” said County Executive Mangano. “A promise is given for those who wear the uniform of the United States that no one will be forgotten or left behind. National POW/MIA Recognition Day is about keeping that promise through this special day of remembrance for the safe return of American Prisoners of War and those still missing in action.” Mangano will be joined by representatives of veteran’s organizations as well as elected officials, clergy and American ex-prisoners of war. Free Prostate Cancer Screening

Men 40 years-old or older, who have not been previously treated for prostate cancer, are encouraged to make an appointment. Screenings will be performed in a private setting by appointment only from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Uniondale Library, 400 Uniondale Ave., Uniondale. Bring a photo ID and two stamped envelopes. If you or someone you know has a young child, now is the time to ensure that every child’s car seat is installed properly. Senator Kemp Hannon is sponsoring a free child car seat safety check from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Allen Park, Motor Ave., Farmingdale. Traffic safety educator Chris Mistron from the NC Traffic and Safety Board will be thoroughly checking your child’s car seat for proper installation and security. At one of Senator Hannon’s Car Seat Safety Checks last year, Mistron shockingly discovered 20 parents who had their child’s car seat improperly installed. Don’t take the chance. Apple Festival

Hosted by the Amityville Rotary Club (631-532-3500) on the grounds of the First United Methodist Church, 25 Broadway, Amityville (just north of Merrick Rd.), from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Apples can be purchased by the bag the day of the festival. You can choose from several different varieties. Advance orders can be made by calling Linda Blatz 631-264-0300 or Wes Powell 631-691-0172. The cost will be available when orders are placed. Also sold at the event will be apple pies, apple cider and other treats, arts and crafts vendors, seasonal plants, face painting and music. Shred-It of Plainview will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 2 pm. and will shred personal papers (one box per person). The service is free and safe and confidential.

Marine and Outdoor Recreation Expo

This year’s expo will feature exhibits on solar energy, green technology, renewable energy, and environmental protection and conservation. Additional activities will include touch-tank displays, face painting, kayaking, fly-fishing and surf casting lessons, snapper fishing and more. The event is free to the public and guests of all ages are encouraged to attend. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Jones Beach West End Boat Basin. The usual Jones Beach $8 parking fee still applies.

YESCCC Annual “Taste of the Town” celebration from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Stuart Thomas Manor, Boundary Ave., Farmingdale. Tickets are 40 per person. Last year, over 35 restaurants and specialty food, beverage and floral establishments participated in this event with over 200 guests. Columbus Day Yard Sale

Farmingdale United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. (corner of Grant Ave.) will celebrate the Columbus Day Fair with its annual Yard Sale on Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Oct. 9 from noon to 5 p.m. New and used items will be for sale, including household goods, toys and crafts, including our best-selling wooden roses and new figurines courtesy of Nicole’s Flower & Gift Shop. Columbus Day Annual Street Fair

The Farmingdale Fire Department generously donated a table at the street fair to the chamber. The chamber will be promoting membership, distributing chamber tote bags and chip clips and will also conduct a raffle. Donate a raffle prize in exchange for a presence at the fair. All donations will be advertised to everyone who stops at the chamber’s table. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The fair begins on Oct. 6 and runs through October 10. Street Fair Saturday and Sunday (the chamber table will be manned on Saturday only). Rides all weekend long. Parade on Sunday. Fireworks and BBQ in the rear parking lot of the firehouse.

Stroke Support Groups

Stroke Life Society is a community organization of survivors and co-survivors in the pursuit of living and helping others. A stroke can be very isolating.
