Columbus Day Annual Street Fair
The Farmingdale Fire Department generously donated a table at the street fair to the chamber. The chamber will be promoting membership, distributing chamber tote bags and chip clips and will also conduct a raffle. Donate a raffle prize in exchange for a presence at the fair. All donations will be advertised to everyone who stops at the chamber’s table. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The fair runs through October 10. Street Fair Saturday and Sunday (the chamber table will be manned on Saturday only). Rides all weekend long. Parade on Sunday. Fireworks and BBQ in the rear parking lot of the firehouse.

Columbus Day Yard Sale
Farmingdale United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. (corner of Grant Ave.) will celebrate the Columbus Day Fair with its annual Yard Sale on Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Oct. 9 from noon to 5 p.m. New and used items will be for sale, including household goods, toys and crafts, including our best-selling wooden roses and new figurines courtesy of Nicole’s Flower & Gift Shop. Man’s Best Friend takes stage Canine Companions for Independence annual DogFest, a walk-a-thon and canine festival to benefit CCI. Gray Wolf Program
The Nassau Hiking and Outdoor Club hosts 4 or 5 educational programs each year. These programs, which take place at the Special Events Building in Eisenhower Park, cover a wide variety of topics relating to the outdoors. The programs are free of charge and open to the public. The next program is scheduled 7 pm. A representative from the National Wolfwatcher Coalition will discuss the re-introduction of the gray wolf into Yellowstone National Park as well as their work with regional wolves. Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center
A social day care program offering socialization and stimulation to persons 60 and over. The caring staff provides innovative activities for those who can no longer attend regular senior centers because of physical and/or mental impairment. It also affords respite to caregivers allowing them valued time to devote to matters of home or personal needs. This interfaith service meets on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. Support groups are also held once a month on Wednesdays. Free courses and academic advice is available to economically and educationally disadvantages adults. Exhibit
Milton Glaser: To Inform and Delight, an exhibition of Glaser’s most storied posters presented by Farmingdale State College. Throughout his career, Milton Glaser has been a prolific creator of posters. His art is the embodiment of American visual culture during the latter half of the 20th century. In 2002, he was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame and in 2004, he was selected for the lifetime achievement award of the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum. These two awards speak to and celebrate an epic career that has seamlessly knit together the worlds of graphic design and illustration and will forever deeply influence the way we see. On view through Oct. 28 in the The Memorial Gallery at Farmingdale State College, 2350 Broadhollow Rd. (Route 110). All welcome. Adults and Children With Learning Disabilities
ACLD, a private not-for-profit agency, is offering individual and family counseling for the primary caregivers of individuals with developmental disabilities. Support groups are available for parents and siblings and new groups for senior parents, parents of transitioning high school students as well as a group for parents who have a developmental disability. Bring a Smile to a Poor Person’s Face
That is the invitation being sent across LI by Hope for the Future Ministries, a Farmingdale-based not-for-profit organization which helps the poor and homeless. Donations are needed for the Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The shop supports the work of Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services, Inc., a multi-service mental health and substance abuse agency located in Hicksville. Free Writer’s Workshops
Got a hidden talent? Why not share it and develop it at a free writer’s workshop? The LI Writer’s Guild is a friendly, Nassau County-based organization of amateur/professional, published/unpublished poets, essayists, novelists and short story writers who meet at informal workshops at the Levittown and Bethpage Libraries. Everything from plot development to characterization to basic literary theory for the fiction and nonfiction writer alike is discussed and practiced. There are reading and critiquing sessions and recommendations and contacts for the more serious writers seeking to publish their work is provided.
