HIGHLIGHTED EVENTS

40DT NickCannonNICK CANNON’S FRESH FACES OF COMEDY @ GOVERNOR’S COMEDY CLUB
We’re not really sure what it is, but we like Nick Cannon. Maybe it’s because he gives out his home phone number on the radio. Maybe it’s because we hear his voice every morning as we’re buying our coffee and we’ve subconsciously formed some type of trained puppy associative behavior. Whatever it is, the America’s Got Talent host, 92.3 NOW FM DJ and Mariah Carey’s hubby is coming to Long Island to MC and host some of his favorite comedians with Jessica Kirson from the Tonight Show and Last Comic Standing. Thursday, 10.6—Jaclyn Gallucci

BLUE OYSTER CULT @ THE PARAMOUNT
Far more influential than they’re ever given credit for, Blue Oyster Cult’s music has not only inspired a wide range of artists including Metallica, The Minutemen and Australian punk band Radio Birdman, but was the inspiration behind the famous Saturday Night Live cowbell skit. A mainstay of the Long Island live music scene, Blue Oyster Cult has spent the past four-plus decades playing a number of local venues including Stony Brook, Hofstra, My Father’s Place, Rockpile and of course Nassau Coliseum in 1980, when the band co-headlined the Black and Blue Tour with Black Sabbath. Add the Paramount onto BOC’s local venues list as they christen the new Huntington rock club’s stage only weeks into this new venue’s existence. Saturday, 10.8—DGdR

The term “Renaissance man” gets tossed around quite a bit, but in the case of Joseph Arthur, it’s a more-than-fitting description of his creative output. In addition to being a busy singer-songwriter who has balanced a fruitful solo career with work in occasional projects like last year’s Fistful of Mercy, Arthur is an acclaimed painter and designer whose work has been exhibited in London and at DUMBO’s Museum of Modern Arthur (MOMA). The ever-prolific Arthur is once again spinning musical plates as he tours behind his eigth studio album The Graduation Ceremony, is recording the tentatively-titled follow-up The Ballad of Boogie Christ, and is working with Jeff Ament on the Pearl Jam bassist’s forthcoming solo project. Saturday, 10.8—DGdR

British post-dubstep-singer-songwriter (yes, that’s a thing) and Mercury Prize nominee James Blake has had an amazing 2011—and it ain’t over yet. The 23-year-old glitch-crooner has just released the six-song Enough Thunder EP, and he’ll be at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday 10.6.—Michael Patrick Nelson

40DT HamptonsFilmfestHAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
Now entering its 19th year, The Hamptons International Film Festival provides a forum for independent filmmakers from around the world to show their art from Montauk to Southampton and an audience of nearly 20,000 visitors, while vying for more than $200,000 in awards. Last year’s festival highlighted dozens of future Emmy winners including The King’s Speech, Black Swan, 127 Hours and Toy Story 3. What will the next big films be? We’re not sure, but they’ll most likely be shown among the one hundred shorts, documentaries, fiction and long-form works appearing at the HIFF. Film synopses available at hamptonsfilmfest.org. Thursday 10.13-10.17. —JG
