Farmingdale’s 13-year-old Hawks traveled to Amityville last Sunday and came home with a 26-14 victory.
The Hawk offensive line of Steven Dentato, Brandon Bustamante, Devin Sellitti, Vin Fisher and Michael Arpaio dominated throughout the game, especially during the opening drive, capped by a 9-yard touchdown run by DaVante Penn. Keyshawn Petitte carried four times for 35 yards on the drive.
Farmingdale’s defense, outstanding all year, put the Hawks up two scores as Bustamante returned an Amityville fumble for the first touchdown of his youth football career. Kyle Mastrelli kicked the PAT to give Farmingdale a 14-0 lead.
With the score 14-7 late in the first half, Steven Kunz intercepted an Amityville pass to give the Hawks another scoring chance. It looked like Farmingdale had taken advantage when Tariq Gibbs took a sweep 60 yards for an apparent touchdown, but a penalty negated the play. Charlie Tomasetti connected with Vin Calderon on a 35-yard completion to set up a final play from the Amityville 10 with one second remaining. Max Cohen was open in the corner of the end zone, but Tomasetti was hit as his pass fell incomplete.
TJ Greco made several open field tackles and Taj Penn and Dan Rizzo stuffed Amityville’s running game. DaVante Penn made the second Hawk interception of the game mid way through the third quarter to set up his own 30-yard scoring run. The PAT failed leaving Farmingdale up 20-7 heading into the fourth quarter. Tahleek Brown made a key tackle helping the Hawks get the ball back and runs by Cohen, Calderon and Greco brought them deep into Amityville territory. On 4th and goal Sean McCormick hit Kenneth Mott in the back of the end zone for the final Hawk score of the day.
The Hawk 13-year-olds are now 4-2 for the season. Next week they travel to Massapequa for a rematch with the long-time rival Mustangs. Earlier in the season this Hawk team led 8-6 mid way through the fourth quarter before the loss of Myles Mills to injury proved too much for them to overcome. Massapequa is still undefeated. The game is Saturday, Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. at John Burns Park.
