The 5th Annual Long Island VisionWalk will be held at Jones Beach State Park, 1 Ocean Pky., Wantagh. Registration: 9 a.m.; Walk starts: 10 a.m. Join hundreds in the fight against blindness at VisionWalk, the national signature fundraising event of the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Since its inception in the spring of 2006, the program has raised over $18 million to fund sight-saving research for retinal diseases including retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, Usher syndrome, and others. People are invited to form teams or walk independently at the free, family-friendly event, which will include activities for children, refreshments, a disc jockey, and more. The Center for the Alignment of Body, Mind and Spirit be sponsoring a food drive for the Harry Chapin Food Bank from Oct. 24 through Oct. 29. Head Injuries in Youth Sports
Preventing, Recognizing and Managing Head Injuries in Youth Sports: What ADs, Coaches and Staff Need to Know. Presented by the NC Sports Commission and Briarcliffe College. Developmental Disabilities Conference
Molloy College Suffolk Center, 7180 Republic Airport, E. Farmingdale, will be presenting its first ever conference for parents of developmentally disabled children entitled: A Parent’s Guide to Post-Secondary Transition Planning: Securing Optimal Supports and Services for Developmentally Disabled Students. The conference is designed for parents, guardians and care-givers of developmentally disabled students who are making the transition from school to a variety of post-secondary life experiences. The Farmingdale Luncheon Rotary Club announces that it is sponsoring the Annual Rag-A-Muffin Parade assembling at 12:45 p.m. at Northside School and proceeding down Main St. to Village Green. Document Shredding Fundraiser
Hosted by the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce at the Stop & Shop parking lot, 55 Motor Ave., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event supports the chamber’s mission of providing scholarships for Farmingdale high school seniors and sponsoring community events. Bring your personal household documents (no businesses please), ATM receipts, checks, old tax records, credit card statements, copies of bills, mail and other papers containing personal information that could provide thieves an easy way to steal money or an identity. All documents are shredded in a professional Mobile Shredding Truck, while you watch, and are then recycled. You can have up to 3 bags or 3 standard storage boxes of documents shredded for $10. America’s Poets Walk With Walt
The program, which will be held at the birthplace of America’s Good Gray Poet at 246 Old Walt Whitman Rd., Huntington Station, will be hosted by Whitman Birthplace Writer in Residence George Wallace. The program will pair a nationally prominent visiting writer with one of Long Island’s fine regional poets for a program of poetry and conversation. Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center
A social day care program offering socialization and stimulation to persons 60 and over. The caring staff provides innovative activities for those who can no longer attend regular senior centers because of physical and/or mental impairment. It also affords respite to caregivers allowing them valued time to devote to matters of home or personal needs. This interfaith service meets on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. Support groups are also held once a month on Wednesdays. Free Educational Services
Free courses and academic advice is available to economically and educationally disadvantages adults. Exhibit
Milton Glaser: To Inform and Delight, an exhibition of Glaser’s most storied posters presented by Farmingdale State College. Throughout his career, Milton Glaser has been a prolific creator of posters. His art is the embodiment of American visual culture during the latter half of the 20th century. In 2002, he was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame and in 2004, he was selected for the lifetime achievement award of the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum. These two awards speak to and celebrate an epic career that has seamlessly knit together the worlds of graphic design and illustration and will forever deeply influence the way we see. Adults and Children With Learning Disabilities
ACLD, a private not-for-profit agency, is offering individual and family counseling for the primary caregivers of individuals with developmental disabilities. Support groups are available for parents and siblings and new groups for senior parents, parents of transitioning high school students as well as a group for parents who have a developmental disability. Farmingdale United Methodist Nursery School
Offers classes for children from 18 months old through 5 years old where they can grow, play and learn together. The school offers a well-rounded program designed to stimulate the child creatively, socially, intellectually, physically and emotionally. Bring a Smile to a Poor Person’s Face
That is the invitation being sent across LI by Hope for the Future Ministries, a Farmingdale-based not-for-profit organization which helps the poor and homeless. •Divorce/Separation Support Group. DivorceCare helps people recover from the pain of separation and divorce. Become a part of a small support group of people who are experiencing the same. Pretty New Thrift Shop
Donations are needed for the Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The shop supports the work of Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services, Inc., a multi-service mental health and substance abuse agency located in Hicksville. Free Writer’s Workshops
Got a hidden talent? Why not share it and develop it at a free writer’s workshop? The LI Writer’s Guild is a friendly, Nassau County-based organization of amateur/professional, published/unpublished poets, essayists, novelists and short story writers who meet at informal workshops at the Levittown and Bethpage Libraries. Everything from plot development to characterization to basic literary theory for the fiction and nonfiction writer alike is discussed and practiced. There are reading and critiquing sessions and recommendations and contacts for the more serious writers seeking to publish their work is provided.
