Gladsky Marine Site in Glen Cove Remediated

clip image002 000The Gladsky Marine Site, located along Glen Cove Creek, underwent cleanup efforts that commenced in the Spring of 2010 with grants from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Environmental Restoration Program and the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Brownfield Cleanup Program which included funding from Nassau County’s Brownfield Revolving Loan Fund.  The environmental remediation project achieved final construction completion in August of 2011.  With remediation of this site completed only one parcel awaits cleanup along the entire 52-acre waterfront redevelopment area.

This former marina, marine fuel storage and repair facility, was closed in 1999.  Subsequent environmental investigations identified numerous contaminants, including semi-volatile organic compounds, metals and asbestos that required environmental remediation to bring the land back to productive reuse.

Engineering services were provided by Dvirka & Bartilucci and EnviroTrac, Ltd., a New York based national firm, was awarded the remediation work.  The NYSDEC and the USEPA provided oversight of all cleanup activities.

“We are proud of the continued progress we have made in cleaning up these formerly contaminated sites and getting them ready for productive use,” said Mayor Suozzi.  “We are taking important steps to return our waterfront to our community and I thank federal, state, and county partners and the USEPA and NYSDEC regulatory agencies for all that they have done to support Glen Cove along the way.”

Over the past decade the City has partnered with several government agencies to remediate and redevelop 52 acres of this waterfront area.  Over $100 million in public and private funding has been invested in assessment, remediation and infrastructure in the WRA.
