Model Train Show

NC Executive Edward P. Mangano and Trainville Hobby Depot will host “Take the Planes to the Trains II” on Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Dec. 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Museum Row, Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Uniondale. This year the show will feature exhibits from local train clubs including: Trainville Hobby Depot’s N Scale Layout, Long Island Hotrack, Long Island Traction, Great South Bay Club O Scale Layout, Trainmasters of Babylon, Long Island N Trak and N-Scale T-Trak. Museum admission, which includes the Train Show, is $14 adults; $12 children 2-12 years of age, seniors, volunteer firefights and military personnel. All fees collected from this self-sufficient event benefit the museum. Trainville Hobby Depot of Hicksville is coordinating the show at no-charge to Nassau County. Business, Social Development, Human Rights In a Transitional World

A talk to be presented by Dr. David B. Lowry as the annual human rights presentation of Amnesty International Group 74. Dr. Lowry will speak at 11 a.m. at the Ethical Humanist Society of LI, 38 Old Country Rd., Garden City. He will discuss the role of social responsibility as international corporate business continues to expand, generally coming at the expense of the nation state. What is the role of social responsibility in this changing climate, he asks, and how should human rights groups and social activists respond to this change? The multifaceted Dr. David B. A Celebration of Holiday Music of Many Faiths

The whole family is invited to hear a festive presentation of music of faiths not only from around the world, but from Baha’l, Muslim, and Hindu, Native American, Christians and Jewish customs. The talented Tice family (Malvern School of Music) is unique in that all play different instruments. Jewish Film Festival

Congregation Beth Israel is pleased is holding its second film in the Jewish Film Festival. The title is Arranged and is about two new teachers in a Brooklyn elementary school, an Orthodox Jew (Rochel) and a Muslim (Nasira). While students and co-workers expect friction, the two women discover they have a shared expectation of entering into arranged marriages. As they experience tension between their traditional cultures and life in contemporary America, Rochel and Nasira form a special bond. The film will be shown at 2 p.m. at Congregation Beth Israel, 141 Hilton Ave., Hempstead. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Admission is $3 temple members; $5 nonmembers. Refreshments will be served. Five Women Wearing the Same Dress

A comedy focusing on five bridesmaids at a society wedding in Tennessee. Just after the ceremony, the women are hiding out in an upstairs bedroom. The dialogue in the play is as frothy as the hideous dresses the bridesmaids are forced to wear. There’s Mindy, the groom’s outspoken, out-lesbian older sister; the bride’s bitter sibling Meredith; Georgeanne, the tightly wound, hard-drinking pal; world-weary Trisha; and 21-year-old Frances, who answers every tempting offer of a drink or smoke with “I can’t – I’m a Christian.” All five women have some personal history with the groom, a charming but nasty predator named Tommy Valentine. Presented by the Nassau Community College Theatre and Dance Department Dec. 14-18 at the NCC Mainstage Theatre. Performances are at 8 p.m., except for Dec. 18, when it is at 3 p.m. Tickets, which cost $9 per person, are $7 for seniors age 55 and over. Tickets sold at the door for that day’s performance are free for college students who have a current valid ID. These tickets are available beginning one hour before curtain. Box office 572-7676.

Messiah

 

On Dec. 16 at 8 p.m. in Garden City’s Cathedral of the Incarnation, the LI Choral Society will continue its 83rd season with a concert featuring a performance of the Advent and Christmas portions of George Frederick Handel’s great oratorio, Messiah. On Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. in the Cathedral of the Incarnation, the LI Choral Society will hold an Open Dress Rehearsal with discounted tickets costing $10. The featured soloists are: Matthew Curran, bass, Gregory Mercer, tenor, Jennifer Barsamian, mezzo soprano and Arlene Travis, soprano, Artist-in-Residence. A Festival of Lessons & Carols for Christmas

The Annual Festival of Lessons and Carols at the Cathedral of the Incarnation, will take place at 4 p.m. This traditional service from England will include music sung by all of the Cathedral choirs as well as carols sung by the entire congregation, featuring a variety of both traditional and contemporary carol settings. Individual: Combine individual therapy and anger management techniques. Bereavement Groups

•Group 1: A woman’s bereavement group is available to help women share and learn about their grief. Groups are held on a weekly basis and are facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker.

•Group 2: A 12-week bereavement support group is available for children ages 7 to 9. Groups will be held on Saturdays and are facilitated by a licensed social worker.

Cradle of Aviation Museum

In the world of aviation, signals and coded messages are an important part of how airplanes and air traffic control speak everyday. The Cradle of Aviation Museum has a variety of free family activities. Walk through the eight museum galleries and you’ll walk through over 100 years of aerospace history with 75 planes and space craft and a variety of examples of how pilots navigated and communicated from the early days of flight through the space program. Museum activities are free with admission and are available each day from noon to 4 p.m. The museum also is home to the IMAX Dome Theatre and is located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Museum Row. NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence

The Coalition is a member agency of the Garden City Community Fund, United Community Fund of Great Neck, Community Chest of Port Washington and United Way of LI. Call 222-2293 for information the following:

•Support groups with individual counseling for incest survivors and survivors of rape and sexual assault. Services are confidential and free of charge. These services are also extended to family members and partners of survivors.

•The coalition operates a safe home for battered women and their children. The Coalition’s Safe Home for Abused Families provides shelter, advocacy and legal assistance, in a safe, warm, supportive, attractive environment. Call the 24-hour hotline 542-0404. The hotline and all services are free and confidential and a counselor can help you find safety.

•If you are 60 or older and suffering from abuse, mistreatment or neglect at the hands of family members or someone who is living with you, help is available. Counseling, legal advocacy and support services to seniors in need of help is offered. All services are free and confidential. Call 542-0404.

Epilepsy Foundation

Located at 506 Stewart Ave. (739-7733) the following is offered:

•Free Puppet Show on Seizure Disorder. A free children’s program on epilepsy using the internationally acclaimed “Kids on the Block” troupe of puppets to public and private elementary schools. These shows are appropriate for the 3rd and 4th grades levels but can be tailored to your needs. Programs are also available for junior and senior high classes. Call Janet Romeo, ext. 145.

•Support Groups. Do you have seizures? Are you having difficulty with jobs, relationships, etc.? Are you isolating from your family and friends? If you answered yes to any or all of the above questions, we have group for you. Call Jennifer Colbert, CSW, ext. 400.

Exhibits

•The Firehouse Plaza Art Gallery at Nassau Community College presents its 2011 Art Faculty Exhibition, through Dec. 22. The exhibition will highlight Maureen Palmieri and Robert Toedter as featured artists. The theme of the show – Borders: Visible and Invisible – reaches across disciplines to define the many borders that we as global citizens observe, react to, become freed from and are limited by. The exhibit is free, open to the public and accessible to the disabled. Artwork will be on display in the showcases in the College Center Building and the G Building as well as the gallery. •Local award winning artist Philip Costa currently has an example of his work on display at Barnes Gallery, corner of Nassau Blvd. and Cambridge Ave., Garden City. Phil has just completed a well-received one-man art show for The Sage Foundation in Glen Cove where many fellow artists who attended attested to his outstanding treatments of the pastel medium. Commissioned pastel paintings are done from ordinary photographs and then transformed into paintings by Phil’s unique style. The public is invited to visit and view Phil’s work.

Sons of Italy

Order Sons of Italy in America is seeking new members to join the America Lodge #2245, Franklin Square, Elmont, West Hempstead, Floral Park, Garden City, Stewart Manor and Malverne. The lodge co-ed with many projects that enhance the preservation of the member’s Italian heritage and raises funds for contributions to worthy charities.
