Harry P. Hanye Jr. age 88, passed away at Flagler Hospital on Jan. 3, 2012. Harry was born one of four children in Atlanta, GA, to Harry and Margarete Hanye. After graduating from Brooklyn Tech High School Harry joined the Army/Air Corps. He honorably served during WWII in the CBI Campaign and piloted B25 bombers with the 12th Bomb Group.
After the war Harry and his wife Sally settled in Farmingdale where they raised their two sons and where Harry enjoyed a 30-year career as a design engineer with Sperry Corp. Harry had lived in St. Augustine for the past 30 years. He served as president of the St. Augustine South Civic Association and was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church. Harry will be remembered as a man who was a gracious host who loved conversation, a man that was both skilled with his hands and with his mind and a man that remained engaged with the world throughout his life, changing and growing at an age when most people are happy enough to stay the same.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sally; two sons, Robert Hanye and his wife Sue and Kenneth Hanye; sister Martha Ficken; sisters-in-law, Florence Spreeman and Dora Karker; grandchildren, Joshua and his wife Emily, Jessica and her husband Bill, Heather and Adam; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Otto, Elena and Benjamin as well as a host of nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by the Craig Funeral Home, St. Augustine, FL.
