Josephine Mildred Hackmack, a longtime resident of Hicksville, died on Feb. 3, 2012 at home. She was 98.
Born on Oct. 24, 1913 in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of William and Lena Welsh and the youngest of three children. Her family moved to Freeport when she was five and she attended public schools there. She worked for an insurance company in Manhattan for several years.
She met her husband Emil in 1934. They were married on Oct. 23, 1938 and moved to Hicksville in 1939 where they raised their four children. He predeceased her in February 1998.
Josephine was a parishioner at Trinity Lutheran Church and a member of the Forever 55 Senior Club, a group with which she went on numerous bus trips. She loved to eat at the Sweet Shop on Broadway, traditionally celebrated her birthday every year with dinner at the Milleridge Inn. She also donated to numerous animal causes and had many cats and dogs over the years.
Survivors include her son Emil (Butch) and his wife Sofia of Brentwood, son William and his wife Diane of Hicksville, daughter Susan Baxter and her husband John of Commack; grandchildren, Robert, Denise, Emily, James, Andrew, Diana and Teri; and great-grandson Noah.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter Shirley; brother William; and sister Margaret.
Funeral services were held on Feb. 8 at the Dalton Funeral Home in Hicksville. She was buried beside her husband at Pinelawn Cemetery in Farmingdale.
