Jeffrey Biegel in Concert
The South Shore Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Music Director Scott Jackson Wiley, will be performing at Molloy College Madison Theatre in Rockville Centre at 8 p.m. The program features Aaron Copland’s Applachian Spring, Saint Saens Piano Concerto no. 2 in G Op. 22 featuring pianist Jeffrey Biegel and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. Jeffrey Biegel is one of today’s most respected artists, having created a multi-faceted career as a pianist, recording artist, composer and arranger. His electrifying technique and mesmerizing touch has received critical acclaim worldwide. Archaeological Institute of America
The LI Society of the Archaeological Institute of America will present a free lecture at 2 p.m. in Room 106, Breslin Hall, Hofstra University, Hempstead. Call 631-420-1564. Speaker: Dr. Mike Parker Pearson received his Ph.D. from Kings College, Cambridge University. He has written many publications of Neolithic and Bronze Age Britain and Europe. Program: Dr. Parker will discuss new excavations at Stonehenge that brings a much wider understanding of how it was formed as a part of a much wider complex of monuments of the Salisbury Plain. Who were the people who built it and where they came from. Recent work has led to the discovery of a large settlement of houses in the area and why the stones used at Stonehenge came from 180 miles away.

Explore the Mysteries of Black Holes
The Black Holes in space have long fascinated astronomers and science fiction writers. In March, NASA is planning on launching the NuStar Telescope which will search for Black Holes and study the most extreme regions of the universe. During the February vacation break, Feb. 20 through 24, the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Museum Row, Garden City/Uniondale area, will help to explain and de-mystify Black Holes through a variety of free family activities. At the Black Hole workshop learn all about the NASA’s NuStar project and participate in spectroscope presentations. Participants will also learn about how a Black Hole is formed and what happens when you get too close to one by making a “Spaghettication” Flip Book which shows the extraordinary gravitational pull of a Black Hole and how it can stretch you out just like spaghetti. Organ Recital by Brandon Dumas
A native of Albany, Brandon is associate organist and choirmaster of The Cathedral of the Incarnation, Garden City. Most recently, Brandon’s work took him to London where he has just finished his studies in Choral Conducting at The Royal Academy of Music. Prior to this, he spent a year with the Choir of Royal Holloway, University of London as co-conductor and organist of the ensemble, recording for the Hyperion Records label, broadcasting regularly on BBC Radio 3, touring Western Europe and California, and performing in such major UK cathedrals as St. Paul’s, Westminster, Gloucester, Ely, Worcester and Salisbury. 4 p.m. at The Cathedral of the Incarnation, 50 Cathedral Ave., Garden City. Black History Month Program
The Nassau Community College Black History Month Committee presents a program in tribute to African American achievements in America. The program takes place in the College Center Building and are free, open to the public and accessible to the disabled. American Chamber Ensemble
Will perform the second concert of its 2011-2012 season at 3 p.m. at the Monroe Lecture Center Theater, Hofstra University, California Ave., Hempstead. •The Nassau Community College Firehouse Plaza Art Gallery presents the exhibit “Corporal Edges” featuring the drawings and paintings of artist Nadege Monchera-Baer. The exhibition can be viewed through March 1. Nadege Monchera-Baer was born in Valenciennes, France, and currently works from her art studio in Los Angeles. Her experiences working with Italian film director Federico Fellini, as well as her time in several creative industries in Berlin, Paris, Rome and New York had a profound influence on her growth as an artist. Gallery hours: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Tuesday 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The exhibit is free, open to the public and accessible to the disabled.
•Hofstra University Museum presents an exhibition highlighting works of art inspired by the natural environment. The Disappearing Landscape: Selections from the Hofstra University Museum Collection on view through March 18 in the Hofstra University Museum’s David Filderman Gallery, located in the Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, ninth floor, south campus, Hempstead, will feature works from the museum’s permanent collection that capture the ever-changing global landscape. This original exhibition curated by the associate director of exhibitions and collections Karen T. Albert, includes 27 drawings, paintings, photographs, prints and sculpture created by artists from a range of countries including the U.S., Russia and Japan. The works date from the early 19th century to the 21st century. A small illustrated catalog as well as a guide to looking will accompany the exhibition and supplemental educational materials will be available on a gallery kiosk with touch screen technology. •The original exhibition Barbara Roux: Environments, on view through April 5 in the Hofstra University (Hempstead) Museum’s Emily Lowe Gallery, features drawings, photographs, poetry and sculpture by Barbara Roux, a combined-media artist, poet, and conservationist. Barbara Roux uses her daily interaction with natural habitats to inform her artistic work with a focus on the forest and coves where she lives on the north shore of Long Island. Her understanding and appreciation for the natural resources of this area have merged with her professional artistic training, resulting in work that seeks to educate us, the viewer, about the value and importance of our natural environment. Roux alters but does not disguise the elements from nature that comprise her sculpture. An illustrated catalog, Barbara Roux: Environments accompanies the exhibit. Supplemental materials including information about the artist, her work, and resources about conservation will be available on a touch screen kiosk in the gallery. •Group 1: A woman’s bereavement group is available to help women share and learn about their grief. Groups are held on a weekly basis and are facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker.
•Group 2: A 12-week bereavement support group is available for children ages 7 to 9. Groups will be held on Saturdays and are facilitated by a licensed social worker.
Cradle of Aviation Museum
In the world of aviation, signals and coded messages are an important part of how airplanes and air traffic control speak everyday. The Cradle of Aviation Museum has a variety of free family activities. Walk through the eight museum galleries and you’ll walk through over 100 years of aerospace history with 75 planes and space craft and a variety of examples of how pilots navigated and communicated from the early days of flight through the space program. Museum activities are free with admission and are available each day from noon to 4 p.m. The museum also is home to the IMAX Dome Theatre and is located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Museum Row. NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence
The Coalition is a member agency of the Garden City Community Fund, United Community Fund of Great Neck, Community Chest of Port Washington and United Way of LI. Call 222-2293 for information the following:
•Support groups with individual counseling for incest survivors and survivors of rape and sexual assault. Services are confidential and free of charge. These services are also extended to family members and partners of survivors.
•The coalition operates a safe home for battered women and their children. The Coalition’s Safe Home for Abused Families provides shelter, advocacy and legal assistance, in a safe, warm, supportive, attractive environment. Call the 24-hour hotline 542-0404. •If you are 60 or older and suffering from abuse, mistreatment or neglect at the hands of family members or someone who is living with you, help is available. Epilepsy Foundation

•Free Puppet Show on Seizure Disorder. A free children’s program on epilepsy using the internationally acclaimed “Kids on the Block” troupe of puppets to public and private elementary schools.
