Scranton Spoils FSC Rams Season Opener

The Farmingdale State College men’s lacrosse team fell to visiting Scranton on Saturday, Feb. 25, (11-5) in the season opener. The FSC Rams now stand at 0-1 overall, while the Scranton Royals improve to 1-0.

In the first quarter, junior midfielder Bobby Thomas (Wantagh) opened the scoring with an assist from senior midfielder Rob Nosworthy (Massapequa). Scranton evened the score at 1-1 with a goal by junior attack Taylor Nelson (Chester Springs, PA). The Rams added two goals in the first minute of the second quarter, from senior midfielder Tim Caden (Setauket) and Nosworthy, to gain the 3-1 lead. But Scranton scored three unanswered goals before the halftime break for the 4-3 advantage.

In the third, Caden tied the game at 13:09, his second goal of the day. The Royals controlled the rest of the way, adding four goals in the third and three in the fourth, while holding Farmingdale State to just one tally in the final quarter.

Scranton had four players posting hat tricks, including Nelson, junior attack Kyle Frank (Glen Arm, MD) and senior midfielder Mike Rufo (Broomall, PA). Sophomore midfielder John Gregitis (Wayne, PA) finished with a game-high three assists and four caused turnovers. Junior goalkeeper Ben Worthington (Jenkintown, PA) made eight saves for the win.

For the Rams, Caden led the attack with two goals, two assists and five ground balls. Sophomore midfielder Al Rocco (Elmont) won 7-of-8 faceoffs and finished with three ground balls. Junior defender Ricky Morales (Holtsville) picked up five ground balls and Junior midfielder Josh Lamantia (Setauket) had four ground balls for the day.

Farmingdale State will now host Maine Maritime on Friday, March 2 at 4 p.m.
