Editorial: Lend A Hand

Just flipping through the paper this week, I realized how many residents are going above and beyond here in Hicksville.

As editor of the paper, I know that the community takes fundraising, school activities and youth athletics very seriously, and that’s something I’m proud to be a part of.

From the Sarah Grace Foundation to the Magro Foundation to Tommy O Memorial Scholarship events, I consider myself fortunate to help promote these altruistic organizations each week.

With the community voting in favor of the school budget on Tuesday, the support is another sign that the community wants the best for its neighbors – let’s try to continue the trend and keep the positive involvement going.

I smile every time I open an email from a parent in Hicksville and see a picture of a youth lacrosse or football team – that not only brings back great memories for me, but also shows how parents are taking an active role in the development of their kids and their community.

It’s easy to get discouraged these days, but sometimes taking a step back to count your blessings is a great way to move forward. My cousin recently climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise money for Parkinson’s disease, but luckily with all the local causes here in Hicksville, we don’t have to travel far or ascend too high to make a difference.
