Gaby Treble Knows Oyster Bay
Gaby Treble called to identify the mystery picture in the May 24 issue of the Enterprise Pilot. She said, “I think that it was taken in the high school when they were voting.” Ms. Treble is a student at the Vernon School. She informed me, “Today we had an assembly on James H. Vernon. We learned when he was born and how old he was when he died. He had three sons and four daughters. He was born in 1873 and was a fireman.”
It’s nice to get a bit of history along with our Mystery Picture solutions, don’t you agree?
Right after Gaby called, Belle Santora called with a little bit more history. Belle said, “I’ve been missing from the paper and missing the notoriety too. I think I know the mystery picture. It’s the school board election. I was on that committee doing the voting books as I did for the Republican elections for many years. And I now vote with an absentee ballot because it’s a little hard for me to get there.
“When I worked the election books, I had the ‘S and T’ book — it was the most difficult. Even in my telephone book there are more “S and T” names than anything else. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it,” said Belle.
She is still a bright penny, but her legs are tired. She said, “I never walked up stairs I always ran. I’m going to be 101 on June 20. I don’t know where the year went. Time flies even though you’re not having fun.” She said, “I couldn’t figure out last week’s picture. I knew it wasn’t Beekman or Roosevelt Beach.” As for her jokes, she said, “My husband had a great sense of humor, my son and my companion for eight years had a great sense of humor. It won’t get you a lot of money, but it does give you a lot of satisfaction. If you have a sense of humor, it takes you through the world well.
“It just comes naturally,” she added, which is a good ending for this week’s mystery picture.
