Out of a field of 123 tryout candidates, Joey Leonard, former Hicksville Comet, was selected to the 23-man U19 Men’s National Team roster, which is set to play in the World Championships overseas in Turku, Finland this July. The team is made up of players from eight different states and showcases 10 players from right here on Long Island.
To get ready for the World Championships, the USA team will be playing a team of Long Island All Stars at Mitchel Field on June 16 at 7 p.m. on the main turf field and suiting up against Joey will be none other than fellow Hicksville native Shane Sweeney, who is headed to play lacrosse at Hoftstra University this fall. Sweeney was selected to be on the elite Long Island All Star Roster that boasts the best talent Long Island has to offer. The game should prove to be a heated contest seeing as it was the Long Island All Stars that came away with the victory in 2008, which was the last time these two teams met.
In addition to the game, there will be a vendor village and plenty of concessions available. Tickets to the game can be purchased online at flglacrosse.com at a discounted price of $7 or at the field for $10. All ticket proceeds directly benefit US Lacrosse and Lax 4 All, a not-for-profit organization that helps spread lacrosse to communities around Long Island.
Please come out and show Joey and Shane your support.
