Community Shows Support For Bethpage Fireman

Kevin O’Toole continues rehab at NUMC

On Saturday, June 16 the Bethpage Engine & Ladder Company 4 held a fundraiser, hosted by The Paramount Theatre in Huntington to benefit Kevin O’Toole, 22, a Bethpage Fire Department volunteer firefighter.

Sergeant O’Toole was critically injured in the line of duty, with second and third degree burns to more than 50 percent of his body while volunteering with the Bladensburg Fire Department in February of this year. He was one of several injured during a house fire at a vacant home in Riverdale, MD, including the fellow firefighter, Lt. Ethan Sorrell, 21, who suffered respiratory burns, down his esophagus and into his lungs.

O’Toole, of Hicksville, continues undergoing rehab and surgeries which have included 10 skin graft surgeries to his stomach, arms, legs, and hands at the burn unit at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) in East Meadow. He was hospitalized for eight weeks before being released from Medstar Washington Hospital’s burn unit in April.

Entertainment at the Paramount benefit was provided by Jimmy Kenny and The Pirate Beach Band – covering Zac Brown Band, Jimmy Buffett and many other favorites. The Nassau County Firefighters Pipes & Drums band also performed for the crowd.
