For the first time in Island Trees history, the boys’ track team became the county finalists at a recent county championship meet in Westbury. They came in a close second to the county champion Valley Stream North team. Individually, Lucas Pugliese became the county champion in the 400-meter race with a time of 51.0 seconds. Pugliese has now been All County for two years.
All County status was also gained by the second place finishes of Stephen Schmidt in the discus, Andrew Zabala in the triple jump, and by Tyler Blauvelt in both the long jump and the 200-meter sprint.
The Island Trees relays did well; the 4×400 team became county champions. They did this by demolishing the school record with a time of 3:30.1. This championship quartet included: Pugliese, Brendon Beiersdorfer, Ryan Paolino, and Nick Alavanja.
Another school record was set by the 4×100 team, which came in second to the Rough-Riders of Roosevelt. This All County team consisted of Phillip Sellitto, Adam Kirschner, Blauvelt and Alavanja. They ran the relay in a swift 44.8 seconds.
