Editorial: Alarmed And Dangerous

According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly two-thirds of deaths from house fires result from properties without working smoke alarms.

According to the Hicksville Fire Department, an area family almost became part of that two-thirds figure this past week when firefighters discovered that the residence didn’t have any working smoke alarms following a fire.

For around $20, a three-story house can have efficient, cost-effective protection against fires with a smoke alarm installed on each level. Many area fire departments will install your battery operated smoke alarms for free – and many even offer smoke alarms for free or a reduced price. You wouldn’t get into a car without seat belts, so why take that same chance with your home and family?

There are many types of smoke alarms but all can offer lifesaving protection with proper maintenance. Though maintenance varies by model, regular testing will help keep you and your family safe.
