September 19 event supports substance abuse prevention programs
The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) has announced its upcoming 32nd Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational. This landmark charity tournament will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 19 and participants will have their choice of teeing off at Piping Rock at noon, or at The Creek at 12:30 p.m., both in Locust Valley. This year’s tournament will posthumously honor past Board Chair Michael Schaffield, whose leadership and dedication to LICADD supported the organization to meet its mission.
Named for LICADD founder, R. Brinkley Smithers, the tournament’s proceeds ensure that the services LICADD provides – from screening, intervention and referral services, to recovery support, an employee assistance program and mentoring – all remain accessible to the individuals and families who are most affected by drug and alcohol abuse on Long Island.
This high energy, fast-paced event offers a challenging round on two of Long Island’s premier courses, but it has also become so much more. Event co-chair, Jeffery Capazzi explained the appeal of R. Brinkley Smithers by saying, “It is wonderful to be involved in organizing this event, especially when the need for proven drug and alcohol support is so evident and continues to escalate each year.”
Prizes will be awarded in team and individual categories, and participants will have their chance to “Beat the Pro.” With a silent auction, live auction, and dozens of raffle prizes, everyone will feel like a winner, even if their scores are well over par. The live auction boasts playing opportunities at some of the country’s top courses, while the raffle features golf and vacation packages to the faraway destinations of Scotland and Southern California. “Rest assured this is not your run-of-the-mill golf tournament,” explained LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds. “It is an opportunity to provide hope and healing to at-risk individuals and the families who support them.”
The annual fundraiser offers several participation and sponsorship opportunities. Tournament sponsors will be featured in multimedia presentations at the tournament, receive sponsor level signage on the course, a pin flag/tee sign package and great exposure on LICADD’s high traffic website. Each sponsorship package comes with playing opportunities at one of Long Island’s most popular charity golf tournaments. Not a golfer? Not to worry, tickets are available for the Diamonds in the Rough Dinner, to be held at 5:30 p.m. at The Creek.
Foursomes and individual tickets are already on sale and expected to sell out before the event. For more information, or to reserve your spot today, please contact Mary Alice O’Connor at 516-747-2606, ext. 105 or visit LICADD.org
