St. Patrick’s Day Sandwich And Dessert Card Party

The Rosary Altar Society of St. Joseph’s Church in Garden City has scheduled its annual St. Patrick’s Day Sandwich and Dessert Card Party from noon to 4 p.m. in the St. Joseph’s School gymnasium. All Rosarians and their guests are invited to join in the fun. The committee has decided to have the event catered by Lani’s Caterers. The cost is $21 per person.  Reservations can be made for tables of four at a cost of $84. The names of the attendees at each table must be included along with the name of the contact person and his/her telephone number. Advanced reservations are required. The committee is busy gathering table prizes and raffle prizes. They are also planning a Lucky Bucks Drawing. Checks should be made payable to St. Joseph’s Rosary Altar Society. Please mail your reservations to Mrs. Helen Kenny at 132 Chestnut St. in Garden City by Feb. 21. Reservations will be honored on a first come first served basis.

One Man’s Trash Or Treasure

Do you have something that is old, unusual perhaps even bizarre? How many times have you thought that maybe it has some value, or even be very valuable? Then this is the program for you.  Eddie Costello and his wife Jean will present a lecture at 2 p.m. at the Garden City Public Library that is both informative and highly entertaining. Here, you’ll learn how to tell if what you have is trash or treasure. The first 50 people registered will receive a free verbal appraisal of any one antique or collectible (no coins, currency, or stamps) regardless of what it is or how old it is. Registration began in person on Saturday, Feb. 23 and is limited to Garden City Library cardholders only.

Trying to find a new mystery writer? Looking for your next book club pick? Or maybe you want something fun and light to read? Join Reference Librarians Laura Flanagan and Ann Garnett at their new reader’s advisory series “Title Swap with the Librarians” on from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Title Swap is a lunchtime series of programs that gives patrons and librarians the opportunity to share their favorite book titles and briefly discuss them. In addition, patrons will have the opportunity to learn more about the other services that the library offers. For those who are unable to attend the program, a list of the discussed titles will be found at the Reference Desk. Bring your lunch and we will serve coffee and tea. This program is open to all adult Garden City Public Library cardholders and registration is not necessary. Don’t forget to bring at least one book title that you would recommend.

Mozart’s Requiem (Levin Edition) And Solemn Vespers

The Long Island Chorale Society with chorus, orchestra and professional soloists, led by the baton of musical director Meredith Baker, presents selections composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The performance will be at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center on 1 South Ave in Garden City at 4 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 DOS, $20 for seniors and $10 for students. First Ladies Tea

In celebration of Women’s History month, the Garden City Public Library will be celebrating the women who have helped shape life in the White House with a First Ladies Tea at 1:30 p.m. Chef Barbara Sheridan will be demonstrating a special afternoon tea menu inspired by dishes served at the White House. Some of the dishes to be presented include: Martha Washington’s Spice Cake, Jackie Kennedy’s Poulet Chasseure, Mary Todd Lincoln’s Strawberry Scones, Laura Bush’s Crab Salad on Blue-Corn Chips, hot tea will be served and so remember to please bring a favorite teacup. Registration began in person on Sunday, Feb. 24 and is limited to adult Garden City Library cardholders.

The popular, life-affirming event of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is returning and people are invited to participate by becoming a sponsor. Submitted creations will be included in the auction/gala to be held at Adelphi University. Mercy Medical Center invites families planning to have children or are already expecting, to a day-long educational seminar. The  8 a.m. to 3 p.m. “Birth, Baby and Beyond” pregnancy conference will feature exhibits, workshops and presentations. Folk Dance Classes

International folk dance classes for beginners and intermediates are offered on Tuesday mornings in February at the Ethical HumanistSociety of Long Island. Classes are from 9 to 11 a.m. and will feature dances from many different countries. The first class began on February 5. There is a suggested donation of $5 for each class. The Ethical Humanist Society is located at 38 Old Country Rd. in Garden City (at the western end of Old Country Road next to the large blue water tower). Monthly Cancer Support Group

Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group meets in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. (Please note the new location for 2013.) The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre-registration is required. Additional groups are formed upon request, including groups for men with breast cancer and family members. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work in Garden City. •Support group for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

•Support group for women post treatment will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

•Support group for young women with breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

•Support group for women with metastatic breast cancer will meet weekly for eight weeks from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

•A telephone support group for women with breast cancer will be held weekly for eight weeks from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Furniture Needed

The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop, 109 Eleventh St., Garden City, is looking for furniture to add to its inventory. The shop can use cocktail tables, end tables, consoles, chairs of all types, dressers, dining room tables, breakfronts, servers, secretaries, mirrors, etc….it’s all in demand. If you have a particularly large piece, take a picture, and show it to Kris or Jill at the shop (516 746-8900). Consignees get 50 percent of the selling price. Parking is convenient because the shop is located on the lower level of the Garden City Historical Museum.

Clutterers Anonymous (CLA), a 12-step self-help group, offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace.
